Digital Graphics/Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems and Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection

I have grown quite a bit in the area of digital graphics/animation. The growing process began in the Vision IT with the group project, and I have grown every day since the institute. My growth has occurred by completing the TATC projects, going through tutorials and receiving assistance from my buddy, mentor and teaching partner. Some of the assignments which caused me to grow involved optimizing graphics, using 2D/3D images, learning file types and creating animations in Flash. I have also grown by preparing animation assignments for my courses at school. My students continue to amaze me with the products they create.

I did not realize how much I needed to learn, and I don't think I fully comprehend the learning that will take place before completing the TATC course. However, I am excited about future learning in this area. I plan to learn more about Flash ActionScripting and teach an advanced unit to my students next year.

Title: Art Critique Project

Course: TATC Foundations Course

Date Created: August 21, 2002

Source: Student Work, CDs, Internet (artist unknown), Super Bowl Magazine

Media: HTML Web Page Format, Dreamweaver

Description: This project required one example for each Technology Application subject to analyze for effective use of the Elements and Principles of Design. The Technology Application examples were critiqued using the guidelines listed below.

  • Comparing and contrasting the rules of visual composition such as the rule of thirds and the golden section/rectangle with respect to harmony and balance as well as discord and drama
  • Identifying pictorial qualities in a design such as shape and form, space and depth, and pattern and texture to create visual unity and desired effects in designs
  • Evaluating the fundamental concepts of a design, including composition and lighting
  • Analyzing graphic designs to decide the point of interest and the attributes that determine the dominance and support of the subject
  • Identifying quality in design, such as consistency, alignment, repetition, and proximity

Rationale: I picked this particular artifact because I not only learned about the Elements of Design but I also developed expertise in Dreamweaver. Identifying, evaluating, analyzing and comparing example TA products helped me to better understand the principles of design. All of the TA subjects involve the elements of art which the students need to understand and apply to their products. It has been a good exercise for me to search for well designed products in web authoring, multimedia, digital graphics, video technology and desktop publishing. I am better prepared to assist students in developing products that are visually appealing, efficient and effective.

Implications for future: I am planning on teaching students the Elements of Design this year in Web Mastering and Multimedia. The Foundations course and the Art Critique assignment have helped me to become more knowledgeable and better able to teach students concerning the Elements of Design. Since I have a number of students who are artistically gifted, it will be an exciting unit to teach. I am sure I will learn quite a bit from the students!

Reviewers Comments, Names & Titles: You did an awesome job! I just love the description of the digital graphics--you captured the idea perfectly.
Diana Saenz (TATC Participant)

You have great examples. They are all very creative. The dog with the ball was fun and happy as well as the multimedia example.

Title: Animation Creation and Interactive Internet Photo Album

Course:TATC Multimedia

Date Created: February 26, 2003

Source: Personal Knowledge, Macromedia Flash Advanced by Russell Chun

Media: Flash MX, Dreamweaver MX, Photoshop Elements, HP Scanner and Digital Camera

Description: This activity involved using animation skills to create a multimedia production. The focus of the activity is to create an animated, interactive Internet photo album. The photo album is to begin with a splash page and include a web page with all the other requirements. The criteria for the multimedia production are listed below.

  • Include between 5 - 10 pictures that are a combination of vector and/or bitmapped graphics
  • Edit pictures in some aspect
  • Title the photo album
  • Create it in a presentation software
  • Include a splash animation page
  • Create a web site that will house all of the elements below
    • Include a video in your final product
    • Include a description of the pictures
    • Summarize the difference of bitmapped and/or vector graphics

Rationale: I chose this artifact as an example of my best work because I learned numerous animation skills during the design and creation of the project. For this assignment, I learned how to create animated buttons and advanced ActionScripting including linking to other URLs. I also picked this artifact because of the digital graphics that were needed to complete the assignment. Every image was either scanner or imported from a digital camera. The images were then edited to fit into the animation and optimized and saved for a web environment.

Learning animation principles and Flash software was very exciting and inspiring for me. Once I began the assignment, it was difficult to stop with 10 pictures. Therefore, I decided to add a special tribute to my brother who passed away in January 2003 from leukemia. Animation software allows the creation of a more expressive and interactive environment in web pages and multimedia presentations.

Implications for future: Flash is now my favorite program. It is so thrilling to create web pages and presentations that are more interactive. I am very excited about learning and teaching more advanced ActionScripting next year. It is amazing to me the capabilities of Flash and other animation programs. I don't think I can even fathom the interactive techniques that are available in Flash. What a challenge! I am eager to learn more about ActionScripting through online resources, professional development courses and technical manuals.

Reviewers Comments, Names & Titles: I loved every part of your presentation. Wow! You put a lot of work into the entire thing and I could feel the love you have for your brother coming through in the tribute to him. Very nice job! You have a nice touch.
Diana Saenz (TATC Participant)

Nice transitions. Very smooth. I really liked the camera flashing effects.
Tanisha Lee (TATC Participant)

I loved the cameras flashing. That was so neat! I didn't visit your album yet; I was just looking at the animation! Nice job!
Jamie Crider (TATC Participant)

Your page is great. What did you use to create it?
