Instruction that Incorporates Technology

Know how to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students that incorporates the effective use of current technology for teaching and integrating the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) into the curriculum.

Reflection

Thoroughly incorporating technology into the curriculum where it is appropriate and meaningful is a challenge for the classroom teacher. As a technology teacher, it is much easier for me since I am constantly working with the software and thoroughly enjoy working with technology. It is unbelievable that technology can play a major part in planning, organizing, delivering and evaluating instruction. The Internet, databases and spreadsheets can be used for planning and organizing instruction. PowerPoint, web pages and multimedia presentations can assist with delivering instruction. Online tutorials and network capabilities can be used to assist in evaluating instruction.

Technology teachers can model incorporating technology into the curriculum through offering professional development, teaching methods, promoting cross-curricular units and assisting in the creation of templates and presentations for other subject areas. With technology as a tool, there are endless ways to incorporate technology into all instructional areas for all students.

Artifact #5

Descriptors: Web Page, Elements of Design, Cascading Style Sheets, Rubrics, Web Page Evaluation, Online Instruction

Title: Dreamweaver MX The Basics

Course: TATC 202 Extended Web Authoring

Date Created: December 2002

Source: Macromedia help sites

Media: Macromedia Dreamweaver MX, Photoshop Elements, SnagIt

Description: This assignment required developing a web site focusing on technology professional development for teachers. I decided to create a site to help teachers learn how to use Dreamweaver MX to create web pages. The assignment stressed keeping the intended audience as the focus during the pre-production and production stages. During these stages the page design, color, navigation and content were determined.

A Cascading Style Sheet was also created to aid in keeping the design consistent and streamlined. Also, a customized rubric was created to evaluate the Help Site.

Rationale: I selected this artifact because we were required to plan, organize, deliver and evaluate our own work as well as the work of other teachers in our course. The process we used to create the Help Site supports and encourages learning the requirements in this standard. The process for this product is listed below.

  • Determine the purpose of the web sit and the intended audience
  • Decide upon the main-topics and sub-topics
  • Design a main page layout utilizing Cascading Style Sheets
  • Plan and organize the basic style and structure of the web site
  • Add navigation links to the main layout
  • Locate, organize and evaluate information to be used in the web site
  • Add appropriate content to the web site and optimized images
  • Focus on the Elements of Design during every phase of production
  • Finalize the web site by checking all of the content and links
  • Post the finished product for classmates to evaluate and provide feedback
  • Develop and post a rubric to evaluate the Help Site

Implications for future: From discussions with web masters, I have found that they use Cascading Style Sheets often. I believe it is important for students to know how to create Style Sheets to aid in the development of a web site and for possible employment.

The required rubric for this product was relevant and meaningful. I use rubrics in my classroom for almost every assignment, but I will develop more detailed and specific rubrics in the future. I believe that rubrics clearly spell out what is expected in the assignment and help students to focus on the important aspects of the finished product.

Reviewers Comments, Names & Titles: The teacher help site that you created is just phenomenal! Your design is attractive and your layout is very easy to follow and read. That fact that you chose the bar background with the majority being white aided the site very much by allowing the reader to see the text and images easily. Your instructions and graphics were straight and to the point and left no questions in my mind about usability by beginners. You did an excellent job and hopefully you will be able to share it with your building.

Well organized site. Very thorough and easy to navigate. Good design principles and consistency. Good use of screen shots to help teachers as they work. I think this is a site that any teacher interested in creating a web page could be successful using.
