Acquire, Analyze and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Reflection

I have learned new search strategies and acquired a number of new online resources by completing the assignments in the TATC program. I am also better at evaluating resources because I am more aware of the vast amount of information on the Internet. The resource that fellow teachers have shared have been a valuable source of information. A number of these resources have already been used in the classroom and are relevant to the subject matter.

In the future I will continue to give my students opportunities to enhance their search strategies and validate the information they receive. These are skills they will use the rest of their lives.

Artifact #2

Descriptors: Web Authoring, JavaScript, Multimedia

Title: Web Tools

Course: TATC 202 Web Authoring

Date Created: November 2002

Source: Internet Research, Personal Knowledge, Macromedia Flash Advanced by Russell Chun (Visual QuickPro Guide) and Master Visually Dreamweaver MX and Flash MX by Sherry Kinkoph and Mike Wooldridge (Wiley Publishing, Inc.)

Media: Dreamweaver and Flash

Description: Many sources online provide tools for web authoring. This activity involved selecting three web tools to evaluate. I chose Flash, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript. The evaluation was to be presented in a web page format with the three technologies critiqued side by side in a table. The following information was to be included in the critique.

  • Technology and reference
  • Description
  • Educational purpose
  • Educational value
  • Educational limitations

Also, a "How To" section for one of the technologies was to be added to the web site. This section enables anyone to begin using the technology. I chose Flash for the "How To" section and created step-by-step instructions for the basics of animation. This activity also involved selecting and exploring online tools as well as visiting sites that can be of assistance in locating other resources.

Rationale: I selected this artifact because it required using different search strategies to locate information on three specific topics. Once the information was acquired, I had to analyze and evaluate whether or not the information was accurate and appropriate for the assignment. By determining whether or not the information was appropriate, I learned valuable information about Flash, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScript. I now have resources I can access to answer questions concerning these topics and Technology Applications topics.

Implications for future: I think it is important for my students to be able to use advanced search strategies to locate relevant online resources. It is also important to be able to compare and contrast current technologies in order to pick the right technology for the job. I plan on using this exercise in my classes. My future learning goals also include learning how to create, use and apply JavaScript to web pages.

Reviewers Comments, Names & Titles: Good job of explaining and expanding upon some fairly tough online tools! I will be using that Flash tutorial next year!(don't take the site down). All links worked fine and the color was a nice perky shade.

Your side-by-side comparison of the three types of web tools is thorough and interesting. It's easy to see how education has wanted to tap into these areas because there is so much to offer. You are right when it comes to these tools -- students are wanting to be exposed to more of the interesting and exciting areas. I do believe that Cascading Styles Sheets can be used with several different types of programs so it would be easy to teach. You do a fantastic job with your review! Great work!
