Web Mastering

The Web mastering teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Web mastering, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflections

I have grown immensely in the area of web mastering since I started the TATC program. I now think about the Elements of Design before I design a web page or teach my students. An understanding in the Elements of Design can make a difference when creating a professional web site.

I have also grown in my HTML programming skills by creating web pages and viewing other teachers' web sites. Because of the TATC program, I am able to use Dreamweaver to design and develop web sites. I have also learned how to optimize my web site images keeping in mind download time. My growth in web mastering skills has been exciting and at times stressful. It is an area where I feel I will learn something new every day.

Title: Cruise Alaska

Course: Web Authoring 102

Date Created: September 2002

Source: Graphics from the Internet, books for Dreamweaver MX including Macromedia Dreamweaver MX Shortorder by Que and Teach Yourself Visually Adobe Photoshop Elements by MaranGraphics and Hungry Minds

Media: Dreamweaver MX and Adobe Photoshop Elements

Description: This artifact involved creating a travel web site on a favorite vacation destination. The web site had to include three web pages with global, parallel and local navigation. Other criteria for the project was a home page, storyboard, links to external sites and a site map. A company logo was required along with graphics from the Internet. The tone for the web site had to be determined ahead of time.

Rationale: I chose this project because it is a good overview of the TATC Web Authoring course. This project was the culminating activity for the course. I used the knowledge I had acquired during the course to help me create this web site. My skills in Dreamweaver and Photoshop improved significantly because of this project. Skills in good web design and navigation also improved during the planning and design phase of the project.

I also picked this artifact because I enjoyed creating a web site on a travel destination. I decided on an Alaskan cruise company because I went on an Alaskan cruise on my honeymoon and had a wonderful time. We would like to go on another Alaskan cruise some time in the future.

Implications for future: An assignment similar to this one would be an excellent culminating activity for the TA web mastering course. Students could use all of the knowledge they have acquired to design a final web site. The student web site could be added to a best works portfolio used for job applications, college applications, technical schools, etc.

I also want to continue to improve my web design and creation skills. I plan on using on-line tutorials and technical manuals to assist me with the learning process.

Reviewer's Comments, Name & Title: Your project was great. I really liked the layout and design. The page was very crisp and it looked great. The navigation was easy also.

Title:HTML

Course: TATC Web Authoring

Date Created: September 2002

Source: Personal HTML knowledge and HTML Complete, Second Edition by Sybex

Media: PowerPoint published in web format

Description: This assignment required picking an HTML topic that could be researched. It was to include brief but informative examples of what the tags and attributes of this topic should look like in HTML. I decided to research HTML lists. The product should be appropriate for classroom instruction in the chosen HTML topic.

Rationale: I chose this artifact because one of the main focuses of Web Authoring is HTML. A base of knowledge and understanding is needed in HTML in order to understand web page creation. Even with the web authoring programs available today, it is imperative to know HTML to trouble shoot and work in the code when needed.

The assignment also encompassed researching the topic and organizing the information into a presentation format. Since the product needed to be available on the web, a software program needed to be determined. I decided to use PowerPoint because of its capabilities to present the topic in slides. The Elements of Design were considered during the creation of this presentation.

Once the project was completed, it was published in a web format and posted for other classmates to view and comment. I had not posted a PowerPoint product to the web; therefore, this assignment was beneficial for me.

Implications for future: I plan on expanding my knowledge base of HTML by finding new online resources and reading technical documentation. The more I know about HTML, the more I can help my students when they have problems with web pages. I am also going to add to the HTML curriculum topics I currently teach my students by creating new lessons.

Reviewers Comments, Names & Titles: You really did get more detailed than me in the type--it was nice to see the difference. Your eye for presentation styles and focus is great! The eye is naturally drawn to the "Click" button at the bottom right of the page. What a great job!
