Desktop Publishing

The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection

The past few years I have taught a unit on desktop publishing in my BCIS II classes. I have included publisher as an extension of the Microsoft Office curriculum. I was pleasantly surprised that one of our TA courses would be spent on desktop publishing. I guess when I think about techonology, desktop publishing does not come to mind. After completing the course, I have a different view of desktop publishing. A lot more is involved under the surface in evaluating and producing a document. In the future I plan to include more instruction on recognizing design and placement in a variety of projects. I will also tie this knowledge into my web authoring and multimedia classes.

Title: Desktop Publishing to Send Messages

Course: 104-2 Desktop Publishing

Date Created: January 15, 2003

Source: Shelley Cashman Series, Microsoft Publisher 2000 Concepts and Techniques

Media: Microsoft Publisher 2000 Business Card

Description: I chose to create a Business Card to represent myself and Clyde High School.

The bulldog was an inserted clip art from Microsoft clips online. I used some fill effects to change the color of the background to our school colors black and gold. I created the star logo using autoshapes in Publisher and gradient fills.

Rationale: I wanted the card to convey school spirit. The bulldog is our school mascot and I included the school colors. The motto, "Where Stars are Made" does not belong to Clyde High School. I have heard it used by other schools and I like the attitude it projects about bringing out the best in our students.

Implications for future: I used Microsoft Publisher 2000 because that is the software I use as part of my Desktop Publishing curriculum. I think this will be a creative assignment for my students to master this year.

Reviewers Comments:

Nice job. The only thing I would change is that I would increase the font size of your name. Debbie Birdsong

Nice job, Laura. A colored background on your web page would have defined the edges of your card better for viewing. I really liked the effect of your off-set stars in contrasting colors. Jane Abel
