Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

Reflection: Just beginning the foundations course of TATC, I had very little knowlege of online collaborative learning. I felt that it was a little more difficult to communicate online then it would have been face-to-face. Thelia Lisle, our group leader, did an excellent job of compiling all of our resources into a very professional document. Researching the impact of web authoring on society helped me make more informed decisions about the design and content of the web pages I have created. Our project's selection to the Hall of Fame was a real confidence builder for future success in other TATC projects.

Title: Impact Report on Web Authoring

Course: 100 Foundations

Date Created: August 12, 2002

Source: Internet Resources, Group Project including "Big Country Tech Teachers" Debbie K. Birdsong, Thelia A. Lisle, Sara Crow and Laura Vinson

Media: Adobe Acrobat

Description: As a company, we researched web authoring regarding the impact that it has had on society. We analyzed information through research, interviews, and personal observation. The concepts related to persuasiveness, marketing, role played, and point of view. The report's main goal was to be a resource for others interested in web authoring. The report included a brief introduction and history of the impact on society, and a list of resources with a brief summary of each site.

Rationale: Our group chose the TA subject of web authoring because we felt it has had the greatest impact on society. We selected Adobe Acrobat to present our report. It is universal and can format a large amount of information in a concise manner. I enjoyed the company experience. We had a great leader and good group participation. Before this assignment I had not spent a lot of time researching a subject on the net. I am not a big surfer. It was great practice using the different search engines. It was very interesting to see the creativity each company used and the differences in their interpretations of how the final product should look. I welcome the variety in learning.

Implications for future: After contributing to this report, I have a greater knowledge of group learning and the strategies to implicate it in the classroom. The resources sited in the report will be a rich wealth of knowledge for future reference in creating web pages. TEKS requires group projects. This assignment gave me an excellent framework for setting this up in my classroom.

Reviewers Comments: Big Country Tech Teachers nailed this one! Great reading on the history and impact of the WWW. I am reminded of how the web has changed things in my teaching field (drafting and design). In the old days if Ford motor company in Detroit needed a design from a mechanical engineer in Houston, they waited 5 days for it to go through the mail. Now, it can be sent from one website to another in 30 seconds!
