Multimedia

The multimedia teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in multimedia, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection

Multimedia is the one class I was looking forward to the most, yet the one I felt was the hardest for me.  The reason I was looking forward to it was that I was told the day before school started that I would be responsible for teaching the class at my school.  Fully unprepared with no resources and no software, I launched into the class with my students.  Throughout the year, I pulled from various resources I found on the Internet and downloaded many trial versions of software we needed to cover the topic at hand.  From this TATC multimedia class, I gained a vast amount of resources not only from the readings and assignments, but also from my classmates.  I was able to see how the various technology application areas could be pulled together to create an excellent multimedia product.
I feel that the most improvement I had in multimedia dealt with sound editing.  I had very little experience in this area and it seemed to be the topic that scared me the most.  However, after completing this class, I was able to take the knowledge I gained and teach the topic to my students.  I do realize, however, that I must continue to gain knowledge and skills in this area to improve the manner in which I teach the topic.
My goals for multimedia are to continue to enhance my lessons for my students.  I gained many ideas on ways to teach not only the class as a whole, but also the individual topics.  Therefore, I must take these ideas and transfer them to the classroom setting and create a fun learning environment.  I want my students to realize how many multimedia products are around us and how important of a role they play in our lives.  There are many things that we would not be able to do as a society if it were not for multimedia products.

Description:
In this assignment, I was to create a photo album of my life, which could combine family, work, a collection of various pictures, or just a hobby.  It required a minimum of two pages, consisting of an introduction (splash) page and a page with all other required criteria.  The criteria required included 5-10 pictures, a video that went with the theme, a brief description of the pictures, a summary of bitmapped and/or vector graphics, the presentation photo album, a credits section, and any extra features to enhance the web page.
Due to the fact that my family is so "aggie" oriented, I decided to title my photo album "An Aggie Family".  I found various family pictures dealing with Texas A&M University and scanned them into the computer.  I did any editing on them using Photoshop.  I also went to the Internet and found some clipart pictures dealing with aggies.  I then took all of these pictures and created a photo album using PowerPoint.
I then used SWISH to create the animation for my splash page and incorporated it all into a web page using FrontPage.  Finally, I found some video footage I took of the Texas A&M Corp of Cadets marching down Congress Avenue in Austin.  I edited this video using iMovie and incorporated it into the web page for the final interactive Internet photo album.

Rationale:
This assignment incorporated various elements of the multimedia class.  It included creating animation, editing digital graphics, web authoring, creating a presentation, and incorporating video.
I included this assignment, therefore, because I felt it proved that I could apply the knowledge I have in these areas to create a multimedia product successfully.  I successfully incorporated all of the various elements required to complete this product.  I felt I had little knowledge in many of these areas before taking the TATC classes.  However, with this assignment, I feel that I am able to prove how much I have gained from this class and my previous classes.  The most important element I feel I learned upon completion of this product is how easy it is to create a product that incorporates many different elements.  As I look back, I now see that a majority of my assignments for my students incorporate one element at a time.  Through this assignment, I have learned that I need to show the students how important it is to incorporate more than one element (when necessary) to create a successful and impressive product.
As for my goals, I feel that I met a majority of them when completing this assignment.  For example, I did not stress too much with this one.  I actually found it to be rather fun and something I would enjoy doing in my spare time!  I also feel that I completed this assignment to the best of my ability and I plan to use the knowledge I gained during instruction to my students.  One goal that I know I need to work on is bringing some of this knowledge to other teachers in my school.  I know that many of them need training on the various areas of multimedia.

Implications for Future:
This assignment was very encouraging for me.  It showed me how to incorporate many elements into one multimedia product successfully.  Until now, I have had my multimedia students create products based only on one area of multimedia.  I now see, however, how easy it is to come up with one theme and incorporate that theme into various multimedia areas, then bring the products from those areas together for a final multimedia product.
I plan to use a version of this assignment as a final exam in my multimedia class.  I would, however, also incorporate sound editing into it when using it as a final exam.  I feel that this is the perfect way for students to not only show the elements they have learned throughout the year, but to also still be able to incorporate their own creativity.  I feel that this would be an exam that the students would excel on and not feel the burden of test pressure!
My goals for the future with this assignment is to take it and make a few changes that would help it become a final exam.  I also will need to make it work with the software, hardware, etc. that we have available at our school.  Finally, I need to take the product I created and add some sound editing so the students will be able to see an example fits with what they are required to incorporate.

Description:
During the first week of the 103 Multimedia class, I was to inform my classmates of my favorite song, movie, commercial, music video, 3D movie, or other multimedia production.  For that assignment, I chose the movie The Little Mermaid.   Later, during the last two weeks of the class, I worked on an assignment that required me to create a multimedia product around that movie.
I was to create an entire multimedia product that targeted a specific audience of my choice and "sold" that movie to the audience.  In other words, I was to persuade my audience to watch my favorite movie.  The actual criteria for the multimedia product included a storyboard, timeline, integration of the sound we had edited in a previous assignment, integration of a video clip, link to a site related to the movie, content that was persuasive in nature, credits for the presentation, and a summary of my target audience.
For this assignment, I used FrontPage to develop a web site containing all required elements.  I used the Internet to find graphics, sound files, and a video clip that would enhance the feeling of the site.  I used PageMaker to create the storyboard and timeline and PhotoShop to create a unique background for the site.  For my sound, I found three separate files on the Internet and edited them using Blaze Audio's Wave Creator.  In the end, I produced a professionally looking site that hopefully persuades some to see The Little Mermaid.

Rationale:
The movie integration web site is a well-rounded multimedia product.  It incorporates sound editing, video, desktop publishing, and digital graphics into one final presentation medium.
I included this assignment because I felt it showed improvement on my part when it comes to certain aspects of multimedia.  Before the sound editing project that went along with this assignment, I had done very little in the way of taking sounds and changing them.  In addition, I had never used the software I used to complete the editing of the three sound files.  However, I do feel that I have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge in this area and was glad to be able to include it in this movie integration presentation.  In addition, I also felt that this presentation shows my ability to create a multimedia product that incorporations many of the technology application areas.  I really enjoyed this assignment and felt that it could easily persuade the young at heart to venture "under the sea!"

Implications for Future:
I actually took this this entire assignment and used it in my multimedia class.  Due to the fact that our school does not currently provide a sound editing software package, I had my students complete a review of a sound editing software package they found from research on the Internet.  I then had them download the demo and use that to edit sounds dealing with their favorite movie or TV show.  I had them create a web page integrating their edited sound and a video clip.  Finally, just as in our assignment, they had to make their presentation persuasive in nature.  They really seemed to enjoy this assignment not really realizing until the end that they were integrating the various technology application area.
My goal for my multimedia class is to be able to have my district purchase some sound editing software that can be used not only in my multimedia classes, but also my other technology applications classes.  On the personal side, I need to continue to learn about sound editing and become more comfortable with the topic.  This will not only help in my classes, but also as I continue to master the art of technological presentation.

Reviewer's Comments:
Good color coordination and graphic choices.  Clearly directed to younger audience (than Coan's Mail Call site. Ha! Ha!)  I remember wanting to go back and see the movie more times than my kids wanted to go!  One of my favorites.  Good job!
