Instruction that Incorporates Technology

Know how to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students that incorporates the effective use of current technology for teaching and integrating the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) into the curriculum.

Reflection

Integrating and using current technology for teaching the Technology Applications TEKS into the curriculum is a given for any teacher of a technology applications course.  However, a technology teacher must be able to structure the instruction for a wide range of student abilities.  I have seen first hand through this TATC certification process how important it is to plan, organize, and deliver our lessons in a manner that gives all students the ability to learn successfully.  Within our "TATC classroom" we had varying levels of knowledge and skills as we went  through each class.  The same person may not have been the most knowledgeable or the most in need in every class, but everyone always seemed to pull together to help those with problems.
From this TATC certification process, I have gained many, many ideas on how to implement the Technology Applications TEKS into my curriculum.  I will be going into the classroom next year with many new and fresh ideas that I can take and organize in a manner that will allow me to deliver the topic to my students.  I think what I am grateful for the most from taking these classes is the number of lesson plans we will be able to take from our classmates.  We completed a few assignments that were compiled together to allow each of us to benefit from the work of our peers.
My goal for the future is to not only evaluate the successfulness of each new lesson I implement, but to also continue to gain new ideas.  I hope to gain these new ideas from various sources such as workshops and the new relationships that have been created throughout the TATC certification process.

Description:
I was to create a unit/lesson plan for a desktop publishing product.  The product I chose was a flyer.  In this assignment I was to model what I teach in all of the handouts and examples using appropriate headlines, contrast, typography, etc. The requirements for this lesson/unit plan included objectives for the unit or lesson, a teacher tools and supplies list, concepts and TEKS applications, a sample product of the lesson, the terms utilized in the lesson, procedures used in instruction, an assessment tool, listing of sources used, software and hardware requirements, classroom instruction and lab time, and auxiliary applications.
For this lesson, I took a flyer I had created a few years ago before I learned about the principles and elements of design.  From this flyer, I used what I had learned in the class and applied them to create a new flyer using the same information.  I created each of these flyers using PageMaker.  I then used Photoshop to create a banner for my instructional material and Microsoft Word to create the actual materials.  I created notes for the teacher detailing the daily activities for the unit, a vocabulary worksheet and answer key, a student instruction sheet, a self-evaluation form, a peer-evaluation form, and a teacher assessment form.

Rationale:
This unit/lesson plan was included as one of my "Best Works" for two reasons.  First, it shows my ability to develop an entire unit/lesson that can be used in the classroom to cover a required topic.  It also shows my ability to adapt the lesson to the various types of students we have in the classroom.  Second, it proved to me how important it is to learn the concepts related to the various technology application classes and incorporate them into our everyday life, both in and out of the classroom.
As I looked back on my lessons and tried to find one that I felt best showed what I had learned from a class, I kept coming back to this unit/lesson plan.  I feel that the actual hands-on activity of re-creating a flyer proved it to me.  I actually did the activity by taking a flyer I had created before taking this class and re-creating it after I learned the concepts of the principles and elements of design.  After comparing the two myself, I saw the importance of implementing these concepts.  I am sure once they are compared, everyone will be able to see the difference it makes when implementing the correct aspects into our daily work.
In addition to the importance of implementing basic concepts, I learned from this assignment that even though it may take some time to develop an entire unit/lesson plan, it is well worth it in the long run.  Being able to take the skeleton of a unit and adapt it to the current class makes teaching a lot easier.
As for my goals, I definitely will use this lesson in my desktop publishing class.  I feel that having my examples to show the students, prior to the start of the lesson, will help enhance the importance of the topic.

Implications for Future:
This assignment gave me a great resource for the desktop publishing classroom.  Due to the fact that we were required to create an entire unit/lesson plan, I now have the required instructional materials that it takes to teach this lesson.  I realize I may have to make a few adjustments based on my class size, structure, etc, however, the skeleton of the lesson is in place.
In addition to my lesson, I also have the lessons of my classmates that can be used for desktop publishing topics.  We were given a list of topics to choose from and in the end, together, my classmates and I have developed a vast amount of desktop publishing resources.

Reviewer's Comments:
Your lesson was very detailed and will make a great lesson for any teacher to use.  The layout was nicely done!
