Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Reflection

With the amount of electronic information available today, one must always remember to be very careful.  As we all know, the Internet has provided a way to view electronic information immediately.  However, one must always remember that not all resources are credible and therefore, must have a way to evaluate it once it has been acquired.  With the amount of electronic information that was acquired and developed during TATC, I have learned first hand how important it is to be able to efficiently acquire and analyze information not only for a specific task, but also for a specific audience.
My goal is to develop a manner of reminding my students constantly of the importance of not only efficiently acquiring and analyzing electronic information, but to also evaluate that information to ensure it can be used for the task at hand.  In addition, I am going to have to remind myself daily of this important aspect of technological information as I not only develop lessons for my students, but also as I research the additional software, hardware, etc. that is purchased for my school district.

Description:
For this assignment, I worked in an online group environment.  We were to select one of the technology applications subjects, research information regarding the impact it has had on society, and then present the information in any format our group chose.  The final report was to include a brief introduction of the subject,  a brief history of the impact it has had, and a listing of our resources including a brief summary of each resource site.  In the end it was to be a resource for others interested in our subject.
In order to complete this assignment, our group chose to cover the subject of multimedia.  We then chose a group leader, Shannon Bishop.  Her responsibility was to compile the information and post the final report.  The remainder of the group members, Deanna Drummond, Kim Lowrance, and myself, obtained information through Internet research, interviews, and personal experiences.  Each of us were to provide three or more resources  for the final report.  Once all the information was obtained, Shannon created a web page presenting our findings.

Rationale:
This assignment was my first attempt at completing a project in an online group environment.  I had never before completed a project where I did not meet face-to-face with the other group members.  This really was a neat experience that created a positive outlook for future online group projects!
This impact report was included because in order to complete the assignment, my group members and I were required to  first identify the task requirements.  Once this was completed, we applied search strategies and current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate electronic information pertaining to multimedia.  This assignment also allowed us to go beyond the acquisition of information through electronic sources.  For our report, information was also taken from interviews and personal observations.  Combining all of these types of information gave us the ability to create a well-rounded report that showed how much of a role multimedia has played on our society.

Implications for Future:
I really liked the group aspect of this assignment.  The way it was developed makes each student responsible for a certain part of the final project while giving each of them the opportunity to work on their skills of obtaining, analyzing, and evaluating electronic information.
I plan to use an assignment of this type in some of my technology applications classes.  A majority of the technology applications classes require that students study the impact it has had on society.  I think this was an excellent way to cover the topic.  In the end, not only will the students see the point of view of their classmates, but they will also have worked to improve their ability to only include information they feel is relevant.

Reviewer's Comments:
Hey guys, I was very impressed by your presentation.  I thought the definitions were very good.  I like the sites about the changes in perception and communication.
