Video Technology

The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection

The video technology class was an exciting class for me.  There was a tremendous amount of work that was put into this class, however, I feel that it was one that also brought a tremendous amount of gratitude in the end.  We were taken through the entire process of producing a video.  I personally learned more about the importance of the pre-production stage than any other stage.  I realized through hands-on activities how important it is to make sure your storyboard/script and time management plan are in place before any taping actually begins.  While the production and post production stages are just as important and have their own topics of interest, without the proper pre-planning, a video could become a nightmare.
This is also the class I decided to take as my extended elective.  With assignments from budgeting for a video technology classroom to taking "wild and wacky" shots to taking "bad" shots, this class exposed me to some great ideas for the classroom.  It also showed me how many different ways there are to compress a video and as with just about any other technology topic, there is no one way to get the job done.
My future learning goals for this class is to research more about compressing a video for proper distribution.  This is a topic that I had little knowledge about.  However, even though I feel I learned a great deal about it, I still feel that I could use a few more resources and a little more knowledge in order to teach it properly to the students.  In addition, I also plan to better prepare my lessons on the storyboard/script and time management plans.  I see how important these are in the production of a video and need to emphasize that to my students.

     Mood Piece

Course:
     105 Video Technology

Date Created:

Source:
     Group Project

Media:
Internet, Microsoft FrontPage, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Photoshop 7.0, Window's Media Encoder

Description:
As a group, we were to create a "Mood" piece video with a time limit of 1 min. We were to establish a basic mood to portray throughout the video.  Each member had to edit a video clip that would be included in the final product and write a storyboard for that clip.  Each group also had to fulfill a role – producer/editor, storyboard/script writer, or sound editor.  I was the producer/editor.  Therefore, I used Premiere to edit my clip, add the other group member’s clips, add the sound from the sound editor, and finalize the video.  I then used Window's Media Encoder to compress the video and save it as a wmv file.

I used Photoshop to create a heading for our web page.  I used FrontPage to create the web page used to present the video.  I received the storyboard from the storyboard/script writer and included it in the web page.

Rationale:
This assignment was included because I felt it showed our actual editing capabilities.  It does have the basic elements needed to produce a personal video, however, that was not the purpose of this assignment.  It was to show how we can take video clips, edit them and create a meaningful product.  I felt that this product carried out our theme of patriotism very well.
From this assignment, I learned more about video editing software.  I actually had planned to use iMovie on the iMac computer at my school.  However, I realized that I would be working on it until the last minute at home and had to learn Adobe Premiere.  It was not too hard to learn since I already had video editing experience.  I am truly grateful to realize that I can take my knowledge, apply it to another program, and not have too hard of a time learning it.

I also learned from this assignment that online group work takes a great amount of organization to succeed.  It takes every member finishing their part in a timely manner so that the final product can be created and reviewed before it is turned in.  I felt that, as a group, we all participated and created a project that represented our abilities.
The one goal I did not accomplish with this assignment was to finish it without stressing out too much.  I was stressed on this one.  After I look back, I have to realize that stressing did not help any, in reality; it probably hindered my work more than anything.  One goal that I plan to fulfill with this assignment is to implement into my class.  I like the idea of having them create a mood that can be seen through the video clips used.

Implications for Future:
I think this is a great assignment for a video class.  I currently teach video and have never used this type of assignment.  I think the students would really like to create a video of this nature.  I do believe that I will make them work in groups and have each student fulfill a role, just as we did.  I also like the fact that each person had to edit a clip and create a storyboard for that clip.  It made each person more responsible for the final product.  In addition, it will teach the students that each person must finish their task in a timely manner for the project to be finished on time.  Therefore, time management and organization skills will also have to be used.  What great skills to incorporate into a project!

Reviewer's Comments:
You guys did a GREAT JOB!!  Yes I saw the patriotism, but I also felt somewhat sad because of the tragic events in your clips.  The web page was very informative!!  I’m glad it was a good learning experience, I’m also excited to hear you didn’t have any trouble editing.  The web page and video were very nice.  I felt moved by the whole video.

Weird, Wild, and Wacky Camera Techniques

Course:
     205 Extended Video Technology

Date Created:
     May 9, 2003

Source:
     Individual Project

Media:
Microsoft Excel, Microsoft FrontPage, iMovie, Adobe Premiere, Window's Media Encoder

Description:
I was to create a one to two minute video displaying at least three weird, wild, and wacky camera techniques.  The production of the video had to include a storyboard or script, music and dialog, one or more animated text effects, title and credit shots, and be presented on a web page.  On the web page, there had to be explanations of what I did to develop the project, how each shot helped communicate the point of the video, and my reflections on the project.
For this video, once the storyboard was created in Microsoft Excel, I shot the necessary footage.  I then imported the footage into iMovie, edited the shots, added the necessary transitions and various text slides.  The movie was exported to QuickTime, brought into Adobe Premiere and saved in a format that could be converted to a .wmv file for uploading.  I used Window's Media Encoder to compress and convert the file to the proper format.  The web page was then developed using FrontPage 2000 for presentation of the project.

Rationale:
This video was chosen as one of my "Best Works" because it made me go beyond the "norm" of video technology.  For this assignment I was allowed to  stray from most of the video "rules," take unique clips (from laying on the floor with the camera to crawling on one hand and my knees while taping) and still produce a creative video that has a storyline.  Even though this assignment required an out of the ordinary final product, it still required me to go through all stages of video production.  I had to create a storyboard for the pre-production stage, shoot various video clips during the production stage, edit the clips, incorporating sound and text effects, during the post-production stage, and prepare it for the proper distribution.  In the end, the final product shows that even when video shots are not "perfect", a good video can be produced when the proper production steps are taken.
One thing I learned from this assignment is that we should allow our students to take those weird shots they always want to shoot and produce a creative video.  I now see that these types of shots can be used in a productive way.
This also leads to my goal of using this assignment in the classroom.  I honestly cannot wait to see the look on their faces when I explain exactly what I had to do to tape each shot.  They will probably think I am crazy, however, hopefully once they complete their own video, they will see just how fun the assignment can be.

Implications for Future:
As I stated above in my rationale, this is a great assignment to use in the classroom.  I cannot tell you how many times I have had students shoot wild and wacky shots and try to use them in a serious video.  It never crossed my mind to actually let them take these shots and produce a video.  This assignment gave me the courage to allow my students to actually be creative with their own type of footage.  I do know,  however, that I will have to stress the importance of still creating a video that has a point or story, not just one with a lot of wild shots.

Reviewer's Comments:
I loved this! It seems PERFECT to me. Great ideas for the wacky techniques! The talking ball was a hoot! The special effect on the title card was really neat. VERY NICELY DONE!
