Standard I

Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

Reflection

As a technology applications teacher, it is very important that I stay current with the advancements that are made in all areas of technology.  In order to create an environment that will allow my students to be successful in the world after high school, I must constantly model ethical practices that will expose them to the most up-to-date technology-related terms, concepts, and data input strategies.
My goal relating to this standard includes always trying to maintain a knowledge base and lab setup that will best suit both my students and my school district.  In order to achieve this goal, I will have to constantly attend technology-related events that will help me stay up-to-date with the various technology methods and applications being used.

Description:
For this assignment, I was to research one of three topics - image file formats, how to capture images, or file sizes and how to reduce them while maintaining file integrity.  The topic I chose was image file formats.  I was then to use my own experience, the readings, and/or research as the foundation for this report.  I was also allowed to choose how I would present the information I found.  The actual requirements to include for the topic I chose included presenting four or more formats, a description, platform, advantages, disadvantages, representative graphic examples, two or more URL links, and a summary of the topic.
In order to complete this assignment, I used various resources to find information about various image file formats.  I then used some pictures one of my students took with a digital camera.  I brought them into Photoshop and saved them as the different file formats I would be presenting in my presentation.  Finally, due to the fact that I wanted something I could use later in my classroom, I decided to create a PowerPoint presentation of the information I had obtained.

Rationale:
This assignment gave me the opportunity to research and organize information that I am required to teach in the classroom.  I have had to cover this topic in the past, but always felt that I did not do a good job delivering the information to my students.
I decided to include this assignment because I feel it proves many different points relating to technology.  It shows that I do have the ability to organize my thoughts and ideas in order to create a technological tool that will be useful in the classroom.  It shows my ability to create a presentation for a specific audience using the current technologies available in my school.  Finally, it shows that I am capable of using technology-related terms, concepts, and data input strategies to help show students how to make informed decisions about the various image file formats and when to use them.
With this assignment, I feel that I have achieved a goal of taking information I learn in the TATC classes and preparing it for classroom use.  As I mentioned before, it has allowed me to research a topic I was not comfortable with and create a useful instruction tool.

Implications for Future:
I plan to take not only my presentation, but also the presentations of my peers and use them as resources to deliver the various topics to my students.  From this assignment, I now have many resources to use when covering the topics of image file formats, how to capture images, and file sizes and how to reduce them while maintaining file integrity.
I also plan to continue to create various presentations, whether it be a slide show, web site, video, etc. that will help me to constantly model ethical practices for keeping up-to-date in this ever changing world of technology.

Reviewer's Comments:
