SBEC Standard #7

Desktop Publishing

Katherine Marin

The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Desktop Publishing includes such a wide variety of content from where to place graphics and choosing fonts, to how much white space to include.  I teach a small mini-course in desktop publishing but I would like to be able to be knowledgeable enough to teach students to create and publish a newsletter or school newspaper on a regular basis.  My goals in the future is to be able to teach students so they know how to use desktop publishing software effectively and learn the principals of desktop publishing so they can create effect publications.  To achieve my goal I need to create a curriculum, find effective books and software and learn as much as possible.  I feel up to the challenge.

Descriptors: Newsletter

Title: Technology Times

Course: 104 Desktop Publishing 1

Date Created:  January 21, 2003

Source:  Individual Project

Media: Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Acrobat

Description:  We were asked to create a newsletter to show the Principles and Design of Desktop Publishing with the same topic.  Additionally the newsletter was to include a template, masthead, appropriate use of white space, a banner, and graphics.

Rationale:  I chose to create a newsletter that I could use to inform students and staff on technology news.  I chose our school mascot to be apart of the masthead along with a title that would make the reader know immediately what type of newsletter they received.

Implications for future:  I can use my newsletter to teach basics about desktop publishing as well as show an example for students to use to create their own.  It is also a good example to show staff members who may be interested in creating a newsletter for their department.

Reviewer's Comments:  "Overall your page layout is nice.  I didn't think to put the masthead vertically on the side--good idea."

Descriptors:  Desktop Publishing Brochure Lesson Plan

Title:  Travel Brochure Project

Course: 104 Desktop Publishing

Date Created:  February 5, 2003

Source:  Individual Project

Media:  Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat

Description:  This is a complete lesson plan to teach how to research and create a brochure using Microsoft Word and the Internet.  The lesson plan includes objectives, instructions for both student and teacher, samples, terms, assessments and modifications.  The lesson plan is created so teachers can download documents in both MS Word and .pdf form.

Rationale:  I chose the travel brochure project because it's a lesson that I teach every year and it is tried and true.  This exercise combines several skills that students have to draw on.

Implications for future:  I use this lesson in my BCIS classes.  I use this lesson to teach how to set up a brochure using MS Word, and desktop publishing skills, how to save and insert clipart, and also to help with their research skills.

Reviewer's Comments: Every thing looks good.
