Web Mastering

The Web mastering teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Web mastering, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

I first started building web pages with no formal training and one "How-to" book to guide me. While I'm still not an expert at building web sites, I do feel that I have come a long way in the skill. During the course of the TATC classes, I've developed a level of comfort with basic web design. I can now put a web page together and feel pretty confident about getting it to function correctly and (thanks to study in the elements of design) be aesthetically pleasing. I am currently expanding my skills into more advanced areas of web design. This is a slow, tentative expansion, but it's taking place. Some of the forays into the advanced programming for web design were undertaken almost at gun-point (I exaggerate) in order to pass the Web Mastering courses for TATC. But I lived to tell the tale of actually using HTML, Cascading Style Sheets and JavaScripts. I plan to, again slowly and tentatively, introduce these elements into my classroom. If I don't, I'll be cheating the student of today who will be the web designers of tomorrow. I may learn these skills right along with the students and sometimes struggle to stay up with them, but it will prove to be an enriching experience for us all. I firmly believe web mastering is another skill that will be practically required from tomorrow's businessperson. The business world of today and tomorrow relies more and more on marketing and communication through the Internet. One must have web development skills in order to accomplish this--or pay "big bucks" to hire someone who does have the required skills.

Artifact #2

Descriptors: Digital Images, Web Page Development, Color Analysis and Manipulation

Title: Creating Digital Graphics

Course: Digital Graphics/Animation, 101-1, Week 2 Lesson Samples

Date Created: October 20, 2002

Source: Replication of Candy Wrapper designed by Hershey's Food Corporation, using Photoshop 6.0 on a Gateway Solo laptop. All images were generated on the laptop--no downloads from any source.

Media: Macromedia Dreamweaver Web Page

Description: This assignment required the student to create a sample for the lesson used in the Digital Graphic module, then summarize the following: the software used to create the digital image, the major tools used to create the image and the tasks involved in the creation. The student must also analyze the original image's foreground, middle distance and background attributes; name the basic color scheme that composes the variation #1 image - complementary colors, triad colors, etc.; and analyze how the different color themes altered the image's meaning.

Rationale: I chose this artifact for two reasons. One, I felt that it addressed the descriptors listed for this standard; and, two, I felt that this artifact was a example of some of my best work. I was more comfortable creating the graphic required in this assignment and I felt that the results were quite good. I'm proud of the lesson that I put together for this module and that was reflected in the graphic that was used. I have a strong interest in Web Development and in Digital Imaging. Being able to combine the two interests was fun! I learned more about using gradients and outer glow effects on text. I'm also learning more about shape layers and how to manipulate shapes. One of my goals is to improve my web development skills and digital graphic skills to the point that I can teach these subjects comfortably to my classes. This assignment definitely helped me reach this goal.

Implications for future: The future for me holds even more web development and digital graphic manipulation. Both of these subjects will be explored in much greater depth and I hope to pass along this information to my classes. I'm excited about the opportunities coming in the future. I just hope that when opportunity knocks, it doesn't knock me down!

Reviewers Comments: Wow! This is a really neat lesson, and your sample was great! I'm glad I'm not the student in this case, though. I'm afraid my skills would not make it on this assignment. I'll bet it is much harder than first appearances would make it seem. Like your intro said "deceptively simple".

Descriptors: Web Page Design, CSS pages

Title: Teacher's Help Web Page

Course: Web Authoring Course 202-1 Module Week 2

Date Created: 12/3/02

Source: Web Pages created using Macromedia DreamWeaver 4 on a Gateway Solo laptop. Includes one graphic from Microsoft Clipart Gallery.

Media: Macromedia Dreamweaver 4 Web Page using a external CSS page.

Description: This assignment required me to create a web site that would be used by a selected audience from my school. This web site's purpose is to instruct the users in some aspect of creating a web page or site that can be used in a education setting. Incorporated in this web site is the requirement for me to use a CSS page to format the common html formatting styles.

Rationale: I picked this artifact to demonstrate my skills in Web Authoring for a couple of reasons. First of all, it was one of only two sites that I have recently worked on that included more than one page. Most of the assignments that we have done recently only required a one page web and I felt that a one page web just didn't demonstrate the skills in this Standard as well as a multiple page web did. I used the Teacher Help Site because it's well organized, clear, easy to use and navigate around in and it was my first experience using CSS. I really liked CSS and hope to implement it more in the future.

Implications for Future: I had never had the requirement to create a web site using CSS. I found it was a very useful tool, once I figured out how to set it up. Modifying a CSS page was really simple, once the page existed and was linked to the web pages being modified. I plan on using CSS on web pages and sites that I create for myself and eventually, when I feel a bit more comfortable using CSS, I plan on introducing it in my Web Mastery classroom. The students will love the ability CSS gives them to be even more creative than they already are.

Reviewer's Comments:

Sometimes plain is good. I understand what you mean, though. I feel like the site I am created is so boring looking because I was planning with the style sheet in mind and it kept me from formatting the page the way that I normally would.

It works, though. It really does. :-)
