Video Technology
The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed
to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving
Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas
Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition
to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.
Just a year ago, just the words "video technology" scared
me to death! Each time I contemplated the upcoming course in Video
Technology, I experienced a feeling of dread--knowing that I would
be confused, frustrated and unsuccessful. When the dreaded hour
came upon me and I was forced to face my fears and learn the dreaded
"Video Technology", my first experience was almost entirely
UNsuccessful! Ahah! I must have been right! "Video Technology"
is something scary which should be dreaded and avoided at all costs!
How wrong I was... True, video technology can be pretty frustrating
if you don't have the necessary equipment and if you stress over
have the perfect shot or the perfect sounds, but once you get the
equipment and you realized that editing is all about making an ordinary
shot or sound file very nearly perfect, video technology becomes
one of the most fun and interesting topics in TATC.
I've learned how to edit raw video into something that looks (more
or less) like I want to to look--something that will tell a story
or express a feeling. I've learned how to add sound, transitions
and other components to make my video more effective and I've learned
how to export that video file so that others can see and enjoy the
video that I have created. What a great, fun, creative thing to
do! As a matter of fact, I've chosen Artifact #3, the LOL video,
to be designated my "Best Work".
What next? I've only touched the tip of the iceberg when it comes
to video technology. I know there are many, many things that I haven't
even heard of yet, much less learned. I hope to incorporate video
technology into some of my technology courses. I want to let the
students find out how much fun can be had using "video technology"!

Descriptors: Audio and Video Editing, Web Authoring
Title: The LOLs
Course: TATC Course 105, Video Technology, Week 2, 3, &
4
Date Created: 3/27/03
Source: VideoWave, Pinnacle Studio 8, AudioBlaze, LiveMotion,
Macromedia Dreamweaver
Media: Video, Web Page
Description: We were assigned a two-part task. Part 1, create
from scratch a 2 minute music video. We were to take either video
that we had filmed or video that was downloaded from another source
and produce a music video which included sound, edited video footage,
titles, transitions and any other special effects that would enhance
the video. Part 2, create a web page that promotes the group that
sings the song used in the music video.
Rationale: I chose to use this web page because I believe
that this web page and corresponding streaming video will be very
effective, showing the multitude of skills that I have learned during
this course. When we began this course, I was very, very apprehensive.
Now I'm still a bit on the tentative side, but I know a lot about
video that I didn't know before TATC.
Implications for Future: I can't wait to teach all of these
concepts to my Multimedia students. There is so much to learn about
taking good video and then editing it to become even better. This
course has made me take the steps I otherwise might not have taken
to learn about video production. While I'm still not an expert,
I'm willing to tackle the project of teaching this subject to my
students.
Reviewer's Comments:
Kim,
I know these kids had fun doing this project for you. I am also
a one-act play director and know how those kids love the spotlight!
Design: Your page fit the choice of songs
Content delivery: Your video was cute, costumes were good and the
enthusiasm was great. I think the ending could have been a little
bit more dramatic(the director in me coming out).
Purpose: The purpose was achieved. The viewer got the idea that
these old women were still wanting to be "youthful".
Audience: I think all ages would enjoy watching the video: the young
and the young at heart.

Course: 202 Advanced Web Authoring, Week 2, Discussion 1
Date Created: November 25, 2002
Source: Personal photos taken by Kim Dean
Media: Digital pictures taken with Sony DSC 250, Macromedia
Dreamweaver
Description: Create a storyboard to plan a slide show of
photographs and then create an animated .gif of these images.
Rationale: I chose this artifact because it is a result
of new skills that I learned during this course. Learning how to
create an animation and produce it to a web page was rewarding and
interesting. While it was not as difficult and time consuming as
shooting and editing raw video footage, producing the video animation
was fun and the results are more immediate.
Implications for Future: I plan to teach this skill to my
Video Technology and Multimedia classes. Being able to see how short
animation videos are created will be interesting and fun for the
students.
