Communicate Information

Communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.

Whether you are creating a video, a web page, a newsletter, or a digital animation, you have a message that is meant for a certain audience. The audience, the message, and its purpose all affect your communication. It requires you to use everything you know about your audience, design, format and presentation. I thought I knew a lot about communicating information before I took the TATC program! Throughout the TA modules I have grown to understand that Technology Applications has given me the knowledge, skills, and tools it takes to communicate purposefully, and well in today's world, to diverse audiences. I now have a good understanding of how to do that with today's technology, but will continue to learn new ways to communicate information as technology changes.

Title: Digital Bio - Jan North

Course: 101 Digital Graphics & Animation

Date Created: October 12, 2002

Source: Adobe Illustrator, Adobe GoLive 6.0, Microsoft Paint, video clips, free clipart, personal photographs

Media: Digital graphics, web page

Description: The task was to give a brief introduction of myself - not in words but in pictures - draw a picture or make a collage of myself as an online learner. It had to tell about me, how I feel, how I learn, my family, etc. Using of several of these concepts: The selection tools such as rectangular marquee, the elliptical marquee, the lasso, crop, or magic wand; moving and/or duplicating a selection; layering; adding text; using the drawing tools. The Bio could be in any format, such as a web page or a downloadable universal graphic format.

Rationale: Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words! This is just one of the ways I've communicated information while in the TATC program. This was one of the first things we created in the digital graphics module and it was a lot of fun! I incorporated clipart, scanned photos, video stills, and text. It gave me the chance to use Adobe Illustrator, which was new to me.

Implications for future: I believe you can have fun while learning, even if it's hard work! This project is something that students could create as they are first learning about digital graphics and be successful, even with basic skills. They don't necessarily need software as advanced as Illustrator. This is a fun way to teach the digital graphics software and concepts, and I think students would enjoy it.

Title: Final Project- Training Video

Course: 205 Video Technology Elective

Date Created: May 20, 2003

Source: MGI VideoWave, Camtasia, ELLIS Kids Suite, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Acrobat 5.0, Multiquence 2.0, Adobe GoLive 6.0

Media: Digital video, web page, PDF

Description: Create a 2-3 minute long video from one of the following requirements: 1)Parody of favorite commercial, or movie/TV scene, 2) Short teaching video, 3) Commentary on social issue or news event, The project requirements were: A storyboard or script; Four or more edited scenes; one or more composite shots (picture in picture, side by side or color-key); a talking head shot that cuts away while maintaining the audio, and then returns to the talking help with audio still in sync; animated text; title and credit shots; audio included. This project was presented as a web page and included information on camera/editing techniques along with the description of composite techniques used. In addition, an explanation of each shot, how using that shot helped communicate the message of the video, and a reflection on the project was to be included.

Rationale: This project is another example of communicating information for a different audience. This project required some new techniques that I hadn't done yet, so I spent time researching to find tutorials to learn how to do them, and practicing! I used a software that is new in our department - Camtasia - to caputure the software installation process as a video. It took a lot of finesse to insert these video clips at the appropriate points of me teaching AND still have the audio sync! It was a challenge, and I am proud of how it turned out. I don't know if I can do a "serious" video, because everything I've done has had a humorous side!

Implications for future: I would assign this type of project as a final project for students. It would allow them to show off all they have learned as well as communicate a message. I also plan to do more of these short training videos for my district.

Reviewer Comments: "I really liked your animated text, Janice. Super video--nice choice of music, and your narration was thorough. Your screen captures along with the narration should make this training video very useful!"

Title: Greeting Card

Course:104 Desktop Publishing, Module 2

Date Created: January 20, 2003

Source: Create a Greeting Card Lessons http://desktoppub.about.com/library/weekly/aa072299.htm

Media: Adobe Pagemaker, free clipart, greeting card sayings from http://www.twopeasinabucket.com/words.asp

Description: Following the step by step lessons at the website, I created a personalized greeting card from my son's 18th birthday in March. The instructions were clear and easy to follow, but because I had done this before I modified them as I saw the need. I used the principles of alignment, contrast, and proximity in placement of the text and graphics. I published it as a PDF file for universal readability.

Rationale: I chose this card as an artifact because I felt it had turned out well and I had fun! This is a fun way to learn to edit text and graphics objects in an application, and for younger students it could be a problem solving tool, if they had to figure out how to place the graphics & text so that it would be correct when folded, (instead of being told how to do it). This kind of project is a great way for students to learn basic desktop publishing principles while having fun and using their creativity.

Implications for future: No matter what software I had in the classroom, this lesson could be used with students of all ages. It gives them a chance to learn more about desktop publishing in a way that is fun to them. They can be creative and use their skills for personal projects (birthday cards) as well as business applications.

Reviewer Comments: "Very nice card for your son's birthday--highly personalized. Excellent choice of font, it seemed to "fit" the sentiment and age level well. Thanks for the link to the site for wording. I'm going to check it out. I can't ever seem to come up with things on my own very easily."
