Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

It is difficult to use the Internet effectively without understanding how to acquire, analyze, and evaluate information. Search strategies must be learned, and refined in order to locate necessary information. As I worked through the TATC modules, I continually utilized, and improved my knowledge and skills in this area. For certain projects, I realized that knowing what kind of information I needed, and where to search for that information was critical. I have learned about new Internet resources, honed my search skills, and evaluating information is becoming second nature to me because of what I've learned. This will continue to be an area that I increase my knowledge and improve my skills in.

Title: Evaluating for Content & Functionality

Course: 102 Web Authoring

Date Created: September 22, 2003

Source: Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office Word

Media: PDF, Word Document

Description: In this activity, we were to select a topic of interest and locate several web sites related to that topic. Using the list of questions in the Interactive Guides 1-3 and 2-3 for this module, we were to evaluate the information in the sites that we found for its content and functionality. We then responsed, providing a link to one site that we determined to be reliable, and one that we determined to be unreliable. We evaluated the functionality for better or worse, including the navigation scheme used. We included our evaluations in our response to the discussion. My response was first created in a table in Microsoft Word, and then converted to a PDF.

Rationale: This project was one of many in which we researched, acquired, analyzed and evaluated electronic information. Because this skill is one that must be practiced and refined, I thought this was a great activity! This project also gave the opportunity to analyze sites for website content, navigation schemes, and functionality.

Implications for future: This kind of activity is a great way to teach students about web page design and evaluation. Because there is so much information on the Internet, it is important to have tools to evaluate the information, and understand why one website works, and another does not. I have used this type of activity in the classroom with students. It is something that I will continue to use in district staff development, as well as personally.
