Video Technology
The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.
I had not used a video camera very much before this course. I was excited to learn something that I never tried before, but apprehensive about using the equipment, getting the video into the computer and remembering all the filming and editing techniques! I remember looking at projects from TATC 2001, and wondering how they got sound clips into their video...was I surprised when I did it too! I've learned to capture video clips from the Internet and a camcorder, record sound, edit it and insert it into a video. I've learned that if at first you don't succeed, get some help and try again! I've learned a lot about the equipment & software needed to produce a desktop video, and the features that they need to have. I've experienced being a producer/editor, sound editor and storyboard/script artist. My admiration and awe for these film professionals has grown a lot. I will never watch a movie or TV show in the same way! I plan to continue practicing and improving the skills I've learned up to this point. I attend a monthly meeting for principals, directors and coordinators in my school district. I have been asked to present a video to this group each month that demonstrates how technology is being used at campuses throughout my district. I am excited about sharing what is going on in our school district in this format. I feel pretty competent in using MGI VideoWave, but I will continue to improve my skills and knowledge in using Adobe Premiere. I used an analog video camcorder during this class and I want to get as familiar with a digital video camcorder as I am with the analog.

Title: Music Video "Some Days You Gotta Dance"
Course: 105 Video Technology
Date Created: April 15, 2003
Source: Adobe GoLive 6.0, MGI VideoWave 5.0, Multiquence 2.5, Windows Media Encoder 9
Media: Web page, Video, Audio
Description: The requirements for the music video were to create a two minute video in the Windows Media Video format that could be accessed from the TATC Windows Media Streaming Server. It should demonstrate knowledge in composition, proficiency in basic camera techniques, utilize lighting techniques, demonstrate the use of audio and editing techniques to change scenes on the beat of the music, and include captions and/or titles for video and graphics. This video also needed to be compressed. It was presented in web page format to publicize a music group and feature the music video as a center of interest. A storyboard and project management plan needed to be included on the web page.
Rationale: I chose this project as one of the examples of MY BEST WORK. I think it demonstrates the video and web authoring skills that I have learned up to this point. I was really proud of the video because I had only used a video camera a couple of times before this module, and had never digitized video or added audio. I think the web page represents all the web authoring knowledge and skills I've acquired during TATC. I felt like I had learned more in this module than I have in all the others, and I have learned a lot in all the others!
Implications for future: This was such a fun thing to do. This would be a great project for students because they are usually so "into" music and are familiar with music videos. It allows them to take on several roles in video production and use a variety of video capturing and editing skills, as well as planning and problem-solving.
Reviewer Comments: "I love the song and loved your video! Super creative concept and it was very nicely synched to the music. There were a couple of scenes that stayed too dark to see for me -- when the swing dancers started and the beginning of the Ugachaka Baby scene. It might just be my machine. Very creative! Your web page and font design complemented your theme very well. Congrats on an awesome job."

Title: Weird and Wacky Video Techniques - "Watchin' the Grass Grow"
Course: 205 Video Technology Elective
Date Created: May 7, 2003
Source: Adobe GoLive 6.0, MGI VideoWave 5.0
Media: Web page, Windows Media Encoder 9.0
Description: For this project we were to create a 1-2 minute video displaying at least three weird, wild, and wacky camera techniques. There were not many rules - just be creative and have fun. Like any good video though, it does have to have a point or message. The video project should : 1)a storyboard or script of production, 2) Three weird camera techniques, 3) Music and dialog included, 4) One or more animated text effects, 4) Title and credit shots, 5) Presented on a web page. We were to describe what we did to develop the project and give an explanation of each shot, and how using that shot helped communicate the point or message of the video. And finally, include reflections on project (goals reached/barriers overcome during production)
Rationale: This was a "think out of the box" project! I researched to find the publisher of the song I chose, and then emailed the link given to request permission to use the song, which I hadn't done before. After this course, I did get a reply saying that I would need to contact another depatment to get permission. It was exciting to hear back from them! We had been learning about basic camera shots & techniques. This assignment took us a step further, and made us apply our learning in a different way! I like the way this project turned out, including the web page, but it really began to dawn on me, that I needed a digital video camera for better results. This video was first created as an AVI, then converted to a WMV file. When this video was compressed, it became very pixelated! I've added it because it does show the progress I'd made in learning the digital video skills.
Implications for future: This kind of project is would be wonderful for students because it gives them a chance to apply the filming and editing skills they've learned, as well as be creative!
Reviewer Comments: "I loved your video!! You said in your reflection that the hardest part was getting started. This was the hardest part for me also. It seemed like it took me forever to decide what I was going to do! My husband was watching your video with me and we were both saying.... is that tractor running over that camera..... we could not believe it...... great job!!!!!!!!!"
