Standard I

Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

In the fast-pace world of technology, to meet this standard is quite a feat! It requires the TA teacher to be knowledgable about the world of technology, their campus, their students & teachers, and their district. They need to be able to research, have a wide variety of resources and be able to work with others in order to make decisions about technology applications. This applies to creating a lesson for students, as well as, purchasing equipment for the classroom. In each Technology Applications module I have grown in each of the areas listed above. I will continue to add to this knowledge and experience because technology continues to grow and expand!

Title: Video Classroom

Course: 205 Video Technology Elective

Date Created: April 29, 2003 & May 20, 2003

Source: Adobe GoLive 6.0, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office Excel, assigned readings for this module

Media: Excel Spreadsheet, PDF document, web page

Description: The assignment: Your principal has asked you to design a classroom for your video production class. You have a budget of $30,000. Assume there will be twenty students in the class. Include the type and number of computers, video cameras, still cameras, microphones, storage devices, lighting equipment, instructional software, videotapes, batteries, and any other items you would deem necessary. This should be submitted as a budget proposal in the form of a spreadsheet. When designing your classroom, consider the cost or the return on your investment in lieu of the school budget. The Excel file was converted to a PDF for universal access.

Rationale: I included the video classroom budget project because it was a valuable learning experience for me. I've had the opportunity to plan for a new class and equipment before now, so I was really a beginner! Not having taught Video Technology was also a drawback, so I had no where to go, but up! The readings for this module, and discussions with classmates were very helpful in planning. This project required research for vendors, types of equipment and best prices.

Implications for future: In some school districts, I'm sure that planning and purchasing equipment is often in the administration realm; however, I think it is invaluable for a teacher to do this or at least be a part of the process. Understanding the budget and purchasing process, as well as researching vendors & equipment will help the teacher and the district spend their dollars wisely and be sure they are getting exactly what is needed, long-term, for a Video Technology classroom. Collaborating with the district technology department would help teachers choose equipment and software that would not cause network conflict. It is important to seek advice and information, and collaboration with teachers, administrators and the technology department when making expensive decisions.

Reviewer Comments: "Janice, great choices on your equipment."

Reviewer Comments: "I agree that it was nice to go back and revisit the budget after we had a chance to do some more advanced video projects. I am also with you in that I would definitely visit several other districts that offer video and make sure everything I needed was on the list!"
