Standards:

The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection: Before TATC started, I was very excited about learning desktop publishing. I really wanted to learn more about making brochures, signs, letterhead, publications and business cards. Because of that, I took the extended desktop publishing class as my elective. After the first class of desktop publishing, I really wasn't sure that I liked this TA subject. I was unsure of myself and the projects that I created. I can remember saying to myself that I couldn't believe that I had signed up for the extended DTP course when I disliked the first course as much as I did.

Now that both classes are over, I would have to say that I have a totally different view of the subject. As a matter of fact, I signed up to teach it next year at my high school. I think that I was so frustrated at the software, I couldn't focus on my projects or the elements and principles that I was supposed to be learning. The second time around in extended desktop publishing was much easier for me. By that time I was able to play and experiment with Adobe PageMaker and I became more comfortable using the software. I still have a ton of features to learn about within the program, but I am a lot more knowledgeable in the software program as well as in the desktop publishing concepts.

I think that I started off with a pretty good eye for making things look attractive, but I didn't know the concepts used or sometimes why I even did what I did. After taking these desktop publishing classes, I have really learned a great deal of information that I have used repeatedly throughout my other TATC classes. Now I know and can apply the principles and concepts of desktop publishing to the publications that I create, and make them look very attractive and professional. My goal for this class was to learn how to create professional and attractive desktop publishing publications and I feel that I have done that! With a little more experience and training in my Adobe PageMaker, I could be a true desktop publishing professional!

Title: Sanger Lady Indian Letterhead
Course: This Desktop Publishing Letterhead was created in the Desktop Publishing TATC 2002-2003 course. It was created to use in a discussion thread in Desktop Publishing to send Messages.
Date Created: January 13, 2003

Source: I used a combination of Adobe PageMaker, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Word. I did the entire layout of the letterhead in Adobe PageMaker. I used Adobe Photoshop to create the small and large basketballs, and I used Microsoft Word to create the large basketball to use as a watermark.

Description: I wanted to create a letterhead that had a professional appearance that we could use in our girls basketball office to send out letters or memos to our staff, parents, ect. I also wanted to portray the seriousness and dedication of our program as well as the fun of the sport itself. To create this letterhead I inserted a basketball into Adobe Photoshop and duplicated it several times. After spacing out the balls, I placed the flattened image into Adobe PageMaker. Next I created a watermark in Microsoft Word and placed it in the middle of my publication. I then used Adobe PageMaker to create the remainder of the letterhead. I used different types and sizes of font to make the letterhead more attractive and professional looking.

Rationale: I chose this particular publication because I think that it was a good example of the use of white space, repetition and contrast. It also includes a little bit of typography. The main objective was to create a letterhead that had a professional appearance that I could use in our coaching office and I think that I did that successfully. I feel that the large watermark of the basketball and the quote at the bottom of the page really adds to the professionalism of the letterhead. The watermark gives a soft touch to the page as well. I like the small basketballs at the top of the page as well; I believe that they add color as well as repetition to the letterhead.

Implications for future: I really have a lot to learn in the area of Desktop Publishing. This letterhead is just a small portion of Desktop Publishing. I feel like if I was more comfortable using my software, Adobe PageMaker, I would be able to create better projects. I have learned how important typography is and what an impact that it can have on your publication. Once again, I feel that if I was more experienced in this area that I would be able to produce a more attractive, eye catching publication. Because of Desktop Publishing's importance to me, I plan on tutoring myself and taking additional classes in this area to become more familiar with the principles, concepts and the different types of software packages that are out there.

Reviewers Comments:
Great job. I like the watermark. It is just enough. I think the big basketball in the center is more professional than the border. This would make a great letter, right away everyone would know that this letter would be in some way about basketball.

Reviewers Comments:
Nice job with the letterhead. I was part of apparently a large group of people who decided to do a business card, so it's nice to see someone going for a letterhead. I'm also impressed that you drew up something you'll specifically be able to use immediately.

The colors on your letterhead look good. I might suggest you reduce the size of the multiple basketballs across the top. They're a little overwhelming at this size, and a reduced version might be more unobtrusive while still proving effective.

I selected this artifact as a representation of my best work because it includes a little bit of everything that we have learned throughout this entire TATC class. This project is also extra special to me because I never thought that I could make such a complex publication. I feel that I did an excellent job on my publication and that it looks very professional.

Title: Class Information Publication for Extended Desktop Publishing
Course: This Desktop Publishing Class Information Publication was created during the Extended Desktop Publishing TATC 2002-2003 course.
Date Created: April 25 through May 19, 2003

Source: I used a combination of programs to create this publication. I used Microsoft Word to complete the Course Outline and Scope and Sequence. I used Microsoft Word to create my course calendar as well. I used Adobe Photoshop to create, color and edit my puzzle pieces that were on my cover page and calendar. I used Adobe PageMaker to put everything together and make the final publication.

Description: I created a class information publication that could be used to teach a Desktop Publishing Class. This project took a total of four weeks to create. The first week I created a course outline and a scope in sequence. Our goal was to create a realistic and meaningful scope/sequence and course outline that I could use in my Desktop Publishing class. The scope and sequence shows at what levels the student should demonstrate performance, for what level of student (novice, intermediate, advanced) each project is geared towards, and it also lists the TEKS that apply to each major unit and project that is done. The course outline discusses major topics and an estimated length of time for each. I used the program Microsoft Word, the textbook Adobe PageMaker, and Internet resources to create these. The second week I made the Cover Page Graphic and the Course Calendar Template. For the Cover Page we were to create a graphic to be used on the front page of our publication. This graphic was to be the theme carried throughout the publication. I chose to do puzzle pieces around the front with a catchy slogan. I colored all of the puzzle pieces one at a time using the tools in Adobe Photoshop. I then placed it into Adobe PageMaker to create the rest of the cover. The course calendar was created using a combination of Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Word. I made a template for keeping track of my assignments, due dates and important events. I edited my puzzle pieces that I had previously created in Adobe Photoshop and added them to the corners of my calendar. I thought this would help keep the theme consistent throughout the project. I then put everything together in Adobe PageMaker and created the rest of the publications. Some of the sections that I added were: my teaching bio, my grading policy, a useful links section, computer lab rules, attendance policy and what to do incase you missed my class.

Rationale: I included this publication in my portfolio because I thought it was a great example of putting every aspect of Desktop Publishing into one publication. This class publication information includes every design and typographic principle that there is. It shows a good example of proximity, alignment, repetition, contrast, white space, color, and typography. This project is also extra special to me because I never thought that I could do such a complex publication. The extra time and effort that I spent creating this will really pay off when I get to use it in my Desktop Publishing class. I feel that presenting my class information in a type of publication that will be learned in this particular class is a great example to the students. I do know that I still have some things that I want to learn and I would feel more comfortable if I knew Adobe PageMaker a little bit better. These are both things that will be accomplished in time after this TATC class is over and I have more time to play around and experiment in Adobe PageMaker.

Implications for future:  When I get to teach a Desktop Publishing class, I will be way ahead and totally prepared for teaching this class. I will be using this class information publication and all of the knowledge that I learned throughout this project and course. I feel that presenting information in a type of publication that will be learned in that class is a great example to the students. Doing this assignment has really taught me to look more at the typography. I never really knew how many different things that you could do with just the font alone. Since this class has started I am now becoming more aware of how much typography really effects what your publication is trying to portray. Because of this assignment I am going to spend more time on certain things and try to make them more appealing and attractive.

Reviewers Comments: I really liked your brochure. It was very colorful and easy to read. The colors help draw your focus to each item. Also it was very well divided. Nice touch of the graphic throughout the publication. Very well done.
