Digital Graphics/Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Struggling to learn and produce work that would be of adequate quality for sharing with colleagues was the biggest challenge I have faced in many years. I had never participated in online work before and just learning how to make my work compatible for others to view was hard.

I had to re-learn Photoshop 7 for one of the projects in this portfolio. My animation skills are limited, but using them in this course has helped me reinforce what I do know.

For the future I would love to work more with Photoshop and also improve my skills as an animator with Macromedia Flash. I would like to be able to teach students how to add exciting effects to their web pages and other assignments.

Title: Art Critique

Course: 100 Foundations

Date Created: August 21, 2002

Source: Internet research, TATC resources

Media: Microsoft Publisher Web Page

Description: The task was to choose something that represented each of the five TA's, Digital Graphics, Animation, Video, Multimedia and Desktop Publishing, and describe and analyze its content in a web page. We were to see if the piece created a mood by use of color, if it was designed well using the rule of thirds and if the creator's purpose was achieved.

Rationale: The purpose of this assignment was three-fold. First, it forced us to look for and download different types of applications such as video, graphics and animation which used our Internet search abilities and solidified the five areas of TAs. Second, it made us look closely at technology and see if a purpose was being met. Did the product that we found meet the needs of its audience? Was it designed well? What elements of the sample we good in light of the rules of design? And finally it made us use our own software to publish our findings. This being the first course, I used a familiar software, Microsoft Publisher, to create my web page. I chose this for my first artifact because it was the first web page I put together and I believe that it accomplished the goals of the assignment by showing a sample of each TA and discussing the value it has based on design and color.

Implications for future: I feel that in the future I will look back on this first attempt and realize how much I have learned. Already I am struggling through my Portfolio in Adobe GoLive and learning the new software. Web design is a weak point in my knowledge base, but this assignment was a beginning of lots of new learning.

Course: 101 Digital Graphics

Date Created: November 4, 2002

Source: Photograph of my daughter, Internet

Media: Photoshop 7.0 and Macromedia Flash 4 on AdobeLive 6.0 Web Page

Description: The assignment was to create a unit lesson for students in Digital Graphics to use Photoshop. I chose a theme of "All The World's a Stage" to help create a backdrop for my adapted picture. Through this lesson we were to put together vocabulary, step-by-step instructions, lesson plans and a final product for students to learn and follow. Using Photoshop I took a picture of my daughter and cropped her face to fit on the face of my "actress". I then added a little animation by inserting a man from the library of Macromedia Flash 4 and had him run across the "set" as the director. The web page was done in Adobe GoLive 6.0 and a link was made to each of the elements of my lesson.

Rationale: The rationale behind this assignment was to reinforce our knowledge of digital software and to create a database of lessons for all of us to use in our classes. By putting this in my portfolio, I am indicating that I learned a great deal through the assignment. It took me several tries to get the desired effect using Photoshop, but I learned to stick with my "vision" and keep trying until I mastered the software. I will use this product in my classes, especially the step-by-step PowerPoint presentation and the vocabulary.

Implications for future: Having these lessons at my fingertips will be such an asset in the future. Teaching technology requires a lot of research and having documents like this already completed helps get the instruction off on the right track. Students can relate to the PowerPoint presentation and the theme "All The World's a Stage" puts them in the action of the assignment.
