Description: This PowerPoint presentation was created as part of an Advanced Desktop Publishing course dealing with technical writing. I accessed many of the sites that were given to us as reading material for the course and took bits and pieces from each source to put together this presentation. It could be used at the high school, college or professional level for an introduction to Technical Writing.
Rationale: I felt as if I didn't know enough myself, so I chose to assemble some very elementary concepts about technical writing to use as a tool for teaching others. The field of technical writing is growing as new products and concepts are revealed. Knowing how to produce a technical document is very important in the area of education also. Teachers and administrators are required to document standards of all types in order to satisfy state requirements. The resources provided in the course we great, but too long for students to filter through on their own. By creating this presentation, they can get a feel of what technical writing is about and the resources can be made available for further study.
Implications for future: I will use this to satisfy requirements to teach students about technical writing. This has been a weak link in my curriculum and I am glad that TATC required me to research this topic. I find the topic very interesting because it combines literary skills with the technical world in a unique way. There will be students that find this fascinating and hopefully they will explore careers in this growing field.
