Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

To acquire, analyze and evaluate information is a foundation for the preparation of any technology product. Whether creating a web page or a brochure, one must be able to access the information needed and also be able to evaluate the validity of the information.

Depending on the requirement of the task, using a search engine to find information on a particular topic may be required. Upon finding the information a determination must be made to find out if the information is from a reliable source. The product I have included for this artifact is a brochure that includes specific details about search engines and a list of ways to evaluate a site for validity.

Artifact #12

Descriptors: Desktop Publication

Title: Gathering and Analyzing Electronic Information

Course: 204 Advanced Desktop Publishing

Date Created: May 25, 2003

Source: Internet

Media: Microsoft Publisher, .pdf document

Description: This artifact is an informational brochure to be used by students to help them learn how to research a topic. Also included on the brochure is a list of things to help evaluate a site to make sure the information on the site is valid. On the back of the brochure is a list of search engines or directories that are useful.

Rationale: I created this brochure to teach people how to search the Internet efficiently. This brochure was created during the Advanced Desktop Publishing course out of my need for a quick hands-on resource. Although I did not submit it as an assignment in the course, I believe that the information in the TATC course inspired me to create a document that would be easy to read and appealing to my audience of 15 year olds. Also, checking the validity of a source is important, especially for younger Internet users that are not aware of the "free" exchange of information. The list I included on the brochure will help students decide if the source of the information they have accessed is reliable.

Implications for future: The brochure will be used in my BCIS I classes and also may be shared with English teachers before students begin researching for term papers. The brochure was well received by my students and will be used in future classes as a way to introduce Web research. Because I have become more advanced with my techniques in desktop design during the TATC course, I can create publications quickly and efficiently that will aid my teaching now and in the future.

Reviewers Comments: "This brochure will help me teach students how to search the Internet in my classes. Thank you, Danita."
