Video Technology

The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Video technology was the course I dreaded the most. I have not worked with producing and editing video at all before this TATC course. Through the assignments that we had to do, I learned how to download video from my personal digital camera and how to use MGI Videowave to edit the clips that I had taken. Learning to download and save files from the Internet and put them in a video has proven to be very useful in projects I have done since the TATC course. I am encouraged to try more difficult video projects and look forward to perfecting my skills with editing to the point that I can become a more effective teacher in this area of technology.

Artifact #6

Descriptors: Video Technology

Title: Mood Video

Course: TATC 105 Video Technology

Date Created: March 26, 2003

Source: Video taken by Shannon Bishop, Kim Dean and myself, Audio file from the Internet

Media: MGI Video Wave

Description: This artifact is the culmination of a group project in video technology. The assignment was to select job responsibilities and create a video that portrayed a mood. As a team, Kim Dean, Shannon Bishop and myself, created a short, one minute video. Kim was the audio editor, Shannon the storyboard editor and I was the video editor. The requirements of the video included a one minute time limit, a storyboard or script, at least 3 edited/cut/trimmed scenes from an original clip, sound and credits. These clips were to give the viewer a one word description of the mood we were trying to set.

Rationale: The purpose of the activity was to help us learn our software by allowing us to help each other with the difficulties of a new assignment. The project taught us how to assemble and compress a video file to be placed in a webpage. I included this artifact in my portfolio because it is a great example of how we can work together online to create a product. It helped me realize that I am not alone in my classroom; I can enlist help from hundreds of collegues at the click of a button. Having us work in teams solidified our bond in this endeavor and also helped us create friendships that will be beneficial to us in years to come.

Implications for future: As I get better at video editing, I would like to teach my students using this software. Also, I would like to use it for my personal benefit to create videos of special events. It is exciting to me to be able to "direct" my own video. It has made me aware of what and how I take video on my camera so that it came be used easily in the editing process.

Reviewers Comments: "Very PEACEFUL/RESTFUL. Great audio and title to support the video. Good job!"

Artifact #10

I have selected this artifact to be one of my "Best Works" because it exemplifies the greatest struggle for knowledge that I have overcome in a long time. I learned so much from this project and I feel that it is successful in that it creates a mood with the music and pictures.

Title: Music Video

Course: TATC 105 Video Technology

Date Created: April 10, 2003

Source: Internet graphics, personal video

Media: MGI Video Wave, Adobe Go Live 6.0

Description: This artifact is a webpage advertisement for a musician that includes a personally created video. We were to choose an artist or song and create a music video to promote their work. I chose the song "The World's Greatest" by R. Kelly because I wanted to do a patriotic theme and this song fit with the message I wanted to send to my audience. I used some free graphics from the Internet and took some video to add to the movie. Also, I added text for the title and a closing.

Rationale: The experience of creating this web page and video solidified my knowledge of downloading video from my camera to the computer, using the MGI VideoWave and editing audio. I put this artifact in my portfolio because I am proud of my accomplishments in the area of video editing. I have a long way to go to be a professional, but I do know enough to teach the principles to my students and get personal satisfaction out of creating my own videos.

Implications for future: I will use this both personally and to teach my classes. I have already used the Video Wave to produce an introduction to a wedding video that my husband is doing. I also plan to learn Adobe Premiere and my knowledge of MGI VideoWave will help.

Reviewers Comments: "Danita! Give yourself credit! This is much better than just okay. I think you did a great job and you finished way ahead of the rest of us!"
