The multimedia teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in multimedia, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

The multimedia course was designed to introduce us to all aspects of creating an effective multimedia presentation. My experience in multimedia was limited to Microsoft PowerPoint. I had done very little beyond the basics other than animation of text and graphics and slide transitions. In this course we learned to integrate sound and other images into a multimedia presentation. Multimedia encompasses so many aspects of Digital Graphics, Web Mastering and Desktop Publishing that we were able to refine the skills acquired in previously visited areas. It was in this course that I had my first experience in editing sound. I enjoyed that a great deal. I have a musical background and have been involved in recording some with the contemporary worship group at my church. Although it took a great deal of time, I had fun taking sound tracks, splicing them and putting them together with other clips. This course is one I feel students will really enjoy.

Title: Photo Album

Course: 103 Multimedia Module 2

Date Created: February 26, 2003

Source: Individual project using Adobe Live Motion, Microsoft PowerPoint, Dreamweaver 4.

Media: Adobe Live Motion, Microsoft PowerPoint, Dreamweaver 4, digital camera, Adobe Premier

Description: The project was to create a photo album that depicts our life or something that would describe us in some way. This was to be done in presentation software. Also included was a video clip, either self-created or retrieved from another source. All this would be presented on a web page which included an animated splash.

Rationale: I include this artifact as the first offering for this standard because it provided a small step into the multimedia course. For those of us who had very little experience with video, it provided an opportunity to "get our feet wet." For my first attempt at compiling this album, I tried Video Wave. I sank on this first try and required a great deal of help. Feeling a little out of my comfort zone, I resorted to what I was most familiar with, Microsoft PowerPoint. This activity helped me to become painfully aware of file size and the effect it has on download time. An image heavy product such as this can be quite large and require several minutes to load. Since the completion of this course and experiencing other media on which to create presentations, I now know that there are ways to conserve disk space and time. That will be shown in Standard X.

The photo album I created is compiled of photos of my family. It also includes a photo of the contemporary worship group I belong to at church. The video clip is taken at a rehearsal of that group.

Implications for future: It has become a tradition at DeLeon High School to present a video at the Junior/Senior Prom. It is a collection of photographs of the senior students at various ages. It had been primarily the task of one of the faculty members to create this PowerPoint presentation. As students become more adept at this technology, they are now able to take more ownership in the creation. With the addition of more TA courses, students will be exposed to something other than a slide show for this type of presentation.

Students enjoy taking and keeping photographs of themselves and their activities. I see this as being a wonderful activity for students to create something that they can keep and enjoy long after the school days.

Reviewers Comments: Very nice splash page. I liked the why you animated your letters. Enjoyed your photo album. Nice looking family. Great placement of photos. Alignment, proximity, contrast, and repetition enhanced your presentation. Great job.

Title: Movie Integration - Top Gun

Course: 103 Multimedia - Module 4

Date Created: March 11, 2003

Source: Internet

Media: MPG Video Wave, Cool Edit Pro

Description: This was the primary project for the Multimedia course. We were to create an entire multimedia product about a favorite movie targeting a specific audience. In addition to providing information about the movie, we were to create it in a way to "sell" the product to that target audience. I chose a web page to present this product. It opens with a splash page with audio that might take a few seconds to load.

The following is the criteria:

  • Edited sound into the presentation
  • Integrated video clip into the presentation - either self-created or from another source
  • Link to a site that is related to the show
  • Content persuasive in nature
  • Credits to sites or graphics
  • A written statement summarizing the target audience

Rationale: I include this artifact because it was the first time I had done any audio or video editing. Even though all audio and video were previously done and retrieved from the Internet, I still had to manipulate the clips in order to get the audio to match the action of the video. I enjoyed the audio editing more than I did the video. The finished product is not ready for prime time advertising but the message is present. I used Cool Edit to assemble the different audio tracks and Video Wave to create the video. To have the audio and video match at the moments they did was luck. Video Wave is very friendly and easy to use but it does not allow audio and video editing to be done simultaneously as do other products. I used Adobe Live Motion to create the splash page with which the artifact opens. It is very simple as this is an area in which I have great opportunities to improve.

Implications for future: If I have the opportunity to teach the Multimedia course, this would be a great activity to use in the classroom. There is an endless number of video and audio clips available on line and students would have a great time practicing their editing skills with something like this. Since this is a skill that would be required in the communications or advertising industry, it is very appropriate for the classroom. It could also be used for school activities such as end of year programs to highlight the year in Multimedia style.

Reviewers Comments: Great job, Dotty! I loved your splash page--great animation. I still love this movie and I enjoyed your project. I'll bet it would persuade people to watch it, if there are any left who haven't! Ha! I didn't have any of the problems with the text--I use Internet Explorer, I'll bet it is a cross platform issue with other browsers maybe. All links worked and I liked your simple, yet effective, web site layout.
