The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Digital Graphics/Animation is one of those areas I feel that individuals either "get it" or they don't. I struggled and still struggle with the concept of resolution, file size, file type. I just know when an image looks good and when it doesn't. I am not at the point where I can immediately know what to do about it, however. At the same time, it is fun. I view some advertising campaigns with a new interest. I have made the comment more than once to those with whom I am watching television ads, "that's digital graphics and animation." What an exciting and developing media. Keeping up with the latest software and equipment must be a challenge for public schools. This course has not been offered in my district, but I can foresee it as one that the students would really enjoy.

Before I feel confident enough to teach this course, I will need a great deal more practice and understanding of resolution, pixels, inches, file size, file type, etc.

Title: Art Critique Project

Course: Foundations 100-1

Date Created: August 2002

Source: Individual Development

Media: HTML web page

Description:This project required the student to find one example of each of the five TA subject areas and analyze the for their effective use to the elements and principles of design. The following guidelines were used to complete that analysis:

  • compare and contrast the rules of visual composition such as "rule of thirds" and "the Golden section/rectangle" with respect to harmony and balance as well as discord and drama.
  • identify pictorial qualities in a design such as shape and form, space and depth, and pattern and texture to create visual unity and desired effects in designs.
  • evaluate the fundamental concepts of a design, including composition and lighting..
  • analyze graphic designs to decide the point of interest and the attributes that determine the dominance and support of the subject.
  • identify quality in design, such as consistency, alignment, repetition, and proximity.

After collecting the samples of the TA subjects, we were to create a web page as a way to submit the information. This was one of my first attempts at web page construction. This is the assignment that brought about my first emotional breakdown. The page is image heavy. At that point in my TA career, I did not understand how I needed to save images in order for them to appear correctly on the finished product. It was a lesson learned hard but very well.

Rationale: I have included this artifact for Standard VIII because it covers many concepts that designers of any type of product need to address. This assignment was developed in order to help the student develop an understanding of the principle and elements of design. In my analysis of the examples of the TA courses, I was forced to look at them very differently from the way I had looked at things before. I have no background in art design so this was way outside my comfort zone. Since this assignment, however, I am looking at web pages, publications, and even photographs with a slightly different point of view.

Implications for future: At this point, it is uncertain what TA courses I will be teaching. However, the concepts introduced in this assignment have broadened my knowledge of design and I realize that there are methods to creating an effective product.

Title: Digital Graphics/Animation Unit Plan

Course: Digital Graphics/Animation

Date Created: November 3, 2002

Source: 101 Digital Graphics Module 4

Media: Internet, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Live Motion, Dreamweaver

Description: This is a unit plan for the digital graphics/animation course. In this plan we were to include the following and present it as a web page document:

  • Sample of finished product
  • Animated graphic on home page
  • Lecture notes/handouts with links to universally accessible formats
  • Step-by-step instructions
  • Vocabulary
  • A credits page

Rationale: I include this artifact because it has proven to be a great resource for the classroom. Not only will I have this lesson, but I will have the lessons created by other TATC participant. It will be an incredible resource because of the planning involved in each lesson. Having notes, handouts, instructions, and a finished sample prepared will be a valuable time saver for the digital graphics class.

The lesson I created is one that could be introduced to the mid-year digital graphics/animation student. The student would need to have a good foundation in manipulation of images. Although, my lesson is actually designed to allow the student to use a topic of choice, my example would be an excellent way to enhance an American History lesson, thus providing for a "cross-curriculum" activity.

Implications for future: I will be teaching the Digital Graphics/Animation course for the first time in 2003-2004. I will use this lesson as well as some of the other lessons submitted by my TATC classmates, with their permission. I am grateful that this assignment was given because of the invaluable classroom resource it will provide.

Reviewers Comments: You did an excellent job on this unit.... I especially liked the way you broke down your lesson plan into days. Also, your descriptions on the Lesson Sample made me really understand what you did to get to the final product. I tested all of your links and there are a few that did not work for me. On your Lesson Sample Page, I could not get any of the links for the pictures to work. I also noticed that you had the list of global links on all of your pages except for the instructions page. Then, in your lesson plan, on Day One, you stated to use the following links, but there were no links listed.
I also really like the dark background with the light text. It makes everything really easy to read!

Title: Wedding Collage

Course: N/A

Date Created: November 15, 2002

Source: Personal captured and scanned photographs

Media: Adobe Photoshop

Description: This is a collage of photographs taken at a wedding in Hawaii. My daughter was the maid of honor and I helped her create this collage just for fun. At the time this collage was created, she was enrolled in a graphics course in college. We were able to share many frustrating moments through that semester.

Rationale: I include this artifact because students would enjoy putting something like this together for an end of year activity in a Digital Graphics class. This artifact is created from scanned photographs. That provides a lesson in scanning photos at an appropriate resolution in order for one to be able to work with them more easily. Regardless of the method used to capture images, this could be an end of year activity to create a visual recap of the year for classes or organizations.

Implications for future: Scrapbooking is a popular activity. To do it electronically would be a way to preserve treasured photos for the life of the medium on which it is created. Students love to collect photos of themselves and their friends.

Reviewers Comments: (I posted this collage as an addition to the first discussion of the Desktop Publishing course. I did it just to let my classmates see how far I had come since my first attempt at creating one in the Digital Graphics/Animation course. The following is one comment I received.) WOW!!! I wish I could have been at THAT wedding!!! You did an awesome job on the collage!
