Know how to plan, organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students that incorporates the effective use of current technology for teaching and integrating the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) into the curriculum.

If there is one thing that I have relearned as a result of TATC, it is to PLAN! When I was going to school for certification, we were taught the lesson cycle (yes, I am that old) and to prepare lesson plans that indicated each step of that cycle. Through the years, that planning became just something I did on the "morning of." I have been redirected into the righteous path of planning. I have always felt better about my day when I was fully prepared. It makes me a much more credible educator. Students need structure. A well planned lesson with measurable goals is a must. Students must know where they are going before they can determine how to get there.

Artifact #5

Descriptors: Desktop Publishing, Design Concepts, Web Authoring

Title: Desktop Publishing Unit Lesson Plan

Course: 104 Desktop Publishing

Date Created: February 5, 2003

Source: Information from personal home mail

Media: Microsoft Publisher, Dreamweaver

Description: As a major part of the Desktop Publishing course we were to plan a complete unit for a classroom. In my unit plan, students would be given the opportunity to choose the content and the design of their flyer. While trying to decide what to use as an example, I came across a catalog for one of the music resources I use for my church (I direct the choir). I simply took the content of one of their advertisements and created a flyer to advertise the event.

The following were the requirements for the unit plan:

  • Objective of the unit or lesson
  • Teacher tools and supplies list
  • Concepts and TEKS applications
  • Sample product of lesson
  • Terms utilized in lesson
  • Procedures used in instruction
  • Assessment tool (application assessment is suggested; however, an objective assessment tool will be acceptable also)

The finished lesson plan was to indicate the following:

  • Sources used
  • Software requirements
  • Hardware requirements
  • Classroom instruction time for the unit
  • Classroom lab time for student work
  • Auxiliary applications for modifications, G/T students, etc.

Rationale: This artifact is included in Standard V because it required a great deal of planning and designing. Even the simplest of lessons take a great deal of time to prepare in order to facilitate learning. The teacher must be ready with introduction of concepts, handouts, visuals, etc. The assignment within this lesson plan is a simple one; but, it is one that covers the elements of design that make a product more effective. Those elements are proximity, alignment, contrast, and repetition.

Implications for future: I will use this activity in my Desktop Publishing classroom. The fact that the students are given the opportunity to choose the content and design allows for creativity.

Reviewers Comments: ...The students will like this and it is a good, simple lesson to get students to look for the design of a page... I really liked the design of your flyer and the lesson was easy to follow. I will definitely use this one!
