Communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.

We live in an age of information exchange. To be able to communicate effectively to a target audience is a skill that must be taught to individuals in order for them to be able to exist in today's market place. Knowing how to present a publication that will gain the reader's attention and convey the intended message is the goal of the desktop publisher. I have included the following captioned artifact because desktop publishing is a medium that can reach a large number of people, even if they do not have access to electronically generated material. I have also designated is as a "best work" because it is something that I labored over and I am pleased with the finished product.

Descriptors: Desktop Publishing

Title: Class Information Publication

Course: Extended Desktop Publishing

Date Created: May 20, 2003

Source: Project Using Microsoft Publisher

Media: Microsoft Publisher and Adobe Illustrator

Description: In the Extended Desktop Publishing course, we were to create a publication that could be used for promoting the Desktop Publishing course. The components required included: coverpage and graphic, table of contents, course outline/scope and sequence, course calendar, links, and one additional section of our choice. I chose a four-fold brochure for my publication.

Rationale: This activity was an excellent way to force us to think ahead, plan the entire year of a desktop publishing course and formulate a publication that could be used to distribute to interested students as well as parents. I included it here because it is also a publication that could be available on line as well as having the hard copy to distribute. It is designed to serve as an advertisement and an information tool. The links section, which was compiled by a group of fellow classmates, provides additional resources of interest to the desktop publishing student. I am proud of this brochure. It forced me to plan ahead and begin thinking about the entire year. Although I may not be able to use this brochure "as is," I will certainly have a good foundation from which to build if I take the opportunity to create one that can actually be used.

Implications for future: Having a brochure available for viewing by prospective students and parents will be an invaluable document. The calendar provided allows the reader to see at a glance what the course will entail.

Reviewers Comments:...you have a great resource and the planning will be inavluable. The design you have picked out would do well to be a complete identity. Perhaps letterhead or notes, etc. Your students will see that DTP is a complete package and give the user a very definite impression.
