Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

The technology applications teacher must keep abreast of current technology and be able to emphasize to students that things change daily in this field. Having the World Wide Web at our fingertips makes the task of seeking information so much easier than it was when I was in school. There is so much information available that it is important to be able to discern what is useful and what is not. If we don't find it, it is because we are not taking the time to investigate.

Artifact #2

Descriptors: Digital Graphics, Web Authoring

Title: Image File Formats

Course: Digital Graphics/Animation

Date Created: October 15, 2002

Source: Internet, readings/research from Module 1 in the Digital Graphics and Animation course

Media: Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver 4

Description: In this activity we were given three options to choose from to research and discuss: Image File Formats, How to Capture Images (Various Methods),File Sizes and How to Reduce Them While Maintaining File Integrity. I chose to research the file formats: Areas to be covered were the following:

  • 4 or more formats presented
  • description
  • platform
  • advantages
  • disadvantages
  • representative graphic examples
  • 2 or more URL links
  • summarize topic

The file types I have compared are the following:

  • .jpg (Joint Photographics Expert Group)
  • .gif (Graphics Interchange Format)
  • .tiff (Tagged Image File Format)
  • .png (Portable Network Graphics)
  • .bmp (Windows Bitmap)

Rationale: I include this artifact for this standard because as I researched this information, the difference in the formats became more clear to me and I became aware of the difference in quality from one format to another. The examples given in this artifact are placed there in the format described on that particular page. Another reason I include it is because I thought the web page turned out quite appealing, if I do say so myself.

Implications for future: This is an activity that proved to be very informative with respect to the different image file formats available. It is much more than simply the extension that is given to the image file. One file type may give a totally different appearance than another. It is important to understand that there will be some instances where some formats may not be supported by some programs or media. This is also a good way to gain an understanding of the different file formats as they relate to image size.

Reviewers Comments: I enjoyed your presentation. I liked the format that you used, and it was easy to understand. You especially presented your information on PNG's in a more understandable manner than I had seen in the past on various web sites. Good job!
