The Web mastering teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Web Mastering, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Before the beginning of the Web Mastering course, my only experience with creating web pages was during one day of inservice training several months prior. Of course, I had additional exposure to web mastering in the Vision training, but received a great deal of peer tutoring during that time. Needless to say, I did not retain much. It was during this course that I suffered most of my emotional breakdowns. Most of my problems were in the area of inserting images onto the page. I had difficulty "pointing" to the right location for the image source. It was a very good learning experience because when I have a problem with an image not appearing, I immediately know where to go to find a solution. Learning what little I did about HTML helped in that regard. After completing the course, I am aware of the importance of effective design, navigation ease and overall ease of use. I understand all the navigation schemes and how important it is to know where you are going, where you are, and how to get back.

What I hope to do with the newfound knowledge in Web Authoring is to integrate it into whatever TA course I choose to offer. We live in a global society. Business, entertainment, communication--today's students know how to access plenty of web sites, whether it be games or online shopping. Understanding what has taken place to create those sites which they enjoy will take them to another level of understanding their global world.

Title: Web Site Design

Course: Web Authoring

Date Created: September 30, 2002

Source: Individual project using Dreamweaver 4

Media: Web page software

Description: We were to design a web page for a travel company to feature one of their most traveled destinations. The criteria to be followed included the use of three navigation schemes, global, parallel and local in addition to the information architecture of bread crumbs. I chose a combination trendy/contemporary tone for my site. All page links carried the same logo and navigation tools. To keep it simple, I chose only one destination with links to "accommodations" and "things to do." We were required to provide a site map as well as a storyboard. In addition, we provided functionality test results on the site. In the beginning of the development of This artifact , I had more ideas than I possessed skill with which to make those ideas happen. The title of this site is Tropics Travel. It is a travel agency which specializes in arranging vacations to tropical places. I had what I thought was a terrific idea to make T's out of palm tree images. It became more time consuming than the actual requirements for the page so I chose to let it go. The construction and completion of this page was very gratifying. For the links and images to work was a real accomplishment for me.

Rationale: After completing this project I obtained a clearer understanding of the different navigation schemes and have come to realize how important the navigation is to the functionality of the site. I also developed additional skill in making sure that images were placed in the correct place in order to be visible on the page. This had been a particular problem in previous assignments. The questions for good navigation are helpful to keep in mind when designing each page. Those questions are "Where am I?", "Where can I go from here?", "How do I get back to where I was?" I chose this artifact because it is most representative of a complete web site. That is, the requirements of using all navigation schemes, outside links and consistent theme made this assignment very beneficial in my learning process of web design.

Implications for future: This was an invaluable experience in that it required the creation of a complete site. I will draw from this especially with respect to navigation and functionality. While I considered myself weak in the design area, I appreciate those web designers who carry out a theme throughout their site and make it not only eye appealing but functional. I am now anxious to begin thinking about a general design and theme for my portfolio project.

Reviewers Comments: maybe overdid the script text a little. I might have liked to have done some of the text (maybe the links, or the bread crumbs, or headings or something) in a different font for a contrast.

Title: HTML

Course: 102 Web Authoring

Date Created: September 18, 2002

Source: TATC Web Authoring, 102-1 Module 2 readings

Media: Dreamweaver

Description: In this assignment we were to choose a topic regarding HTML (HyperText Markup Link) code and present the information in either a web page or multimedia presentation. I chose a web page for this presentation.

Rationale: I include this artifact because I was not at all familiar with HTML coding before TATC. I had heard the term but did not have a clue that it was the very foundation of web design. I have learned to appreciate HTML for editing purposes and have great admiration for those who can begin a project with writing the code.

Implications for future: The exposure I have had to HTML code has enabled me to do an occasional "spot check" on what may be going on when it isn't so visible in the design view of a web page. There were several times when looking at the code helped me to discover something there that shouldn't be or vice versa. Therefore, I feel it should be an important part of the web authoring course.

Reviewers Comments:You did a very nice job with this page. The page is nice, the information is clear, and the over all objective is achieved. There were no spelling or grammar problems and the elements and principles of WEB DESIGN was excellent!
