Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

My students hear this phrase often in my classroom: "There is always more than one way to do something." In that context, this statement refers to the fact that there are several ways to perform one software command. For example, to print in MSWord, you can either click on the printer tool button, go to File, Print, or CTRL/P. This is a very simple example of solving the need for a hard copy of a document. From simplest terms to the most abstract concepts, it is necessary for students to understand that just because one does not have the same ideas as another, it does not mean that it is a bad idea. This standard addresses the need for students to be able to think outside the box. I have heard that term often and am still learning to understand its meaning. That must mean I do not think outside the box.

Artifact #1

Descriptors: Discussion on Web Servers

Title: Servers: What do they do? Why do you need one?

Course: 102 Web Authoring - Discussion 2

Date Created: September 9, 2002

Source: Internet, Readings from Module 1

Media: Word Processing

Description: As a discussion in the Web Authoring course, we were to research and respond to the following questions:

  • What is the purpose of a Web server?
  • What advantages and disadvantages do you see of hosting a site on an Intranet rather than the Internet?
  • Is it better to set up your own web server or use a hosting service when publishing a web site?

Rationale: I include this artifact because I had not been in a position to need to know the different possibilities of hosting sites and I found it interesting. As TATC students, we have been preparing many web pages as a way to present the assignments. I had wondered how those who create sites for the World Wide Web get their pages "posted." That shows how little I knew about the process of web authoring. Upon completion of this discussion, I now understand that businesses or individuals can purchase a domain or use one of the existing host sites.

Implications for future: Many students are in to creating their own sites on one of the popular hosts such as MSN, Yahoo, or Geocities. It is also a good way for students to begin to understand the difference between Internet and Intranet.

Reviewers Comments: Your considerations are very important...tech support, downtimes, one's own needs in deciding a hosting service...great job.
