Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

Reflection:
After participation in this program, I have become more aware of the importance of research and validation. Through the exercises provided by TATC, I have been able to compare and contrast different formats of files and tools used in the TA areas. I am more aware of the differences and similarities that are shared by these tools and I believe that the skill and desire to retrieve data on important subjects is only paralleled by the skill and desire to validate it.

Artifact #5

Descriptors: Multimedia, Web Authoring, JavaScript,

Title: Web Tools

Course: TATC 202 Web Authoring

Date Created: December 2002

Source: Internet and personal knowledge

Media: Dreamweaver

Description: Students were required to prepare a side-by-side comparison of different technologies. We were required to give a general description of the technology, the educational purpose, educational values and educational limitations. We were also required to give a list of our resources, and an example of how to use it in your work.

Rationale: I chose this activity for my artifact because it required research, acquisition, evaluation and general conclusions drawn from the whole process. Through this activity, I chose to research JavaScript, cascading style sheets and multimedia.

During the process, I had to do the following:

  • gather information about all three areas,
  • research the educational purpose, value and limitations of each area,
  • organize data in an appropriate format for other classmates to view,
  • choose and apply color and design principles learned in earlier classes,
  • provide a list of resources used during the project,
  • provide an example of how JavaScript could be utilized in a web page,
  • provide appropriate links to outside web sites to help someone who wants to start researching and applying the skills to their own work,
  • post the web page in a format viewable to others using different browsers,
  • receive input from fellow classmates about the research and content on my page.

Implications for future: This particular activity was a great foundation activity that I plan to use with my classes in the future. Even if I do not have the students do it themselves (for lack of time or anything else), I plan to use this side-by-side comparison technique to show the feasibility of using certain tools in their work.

Reviewers Comments:

Kim G. Lowrance (TATC Participant) "Yours is very well done! I like YOUR colors and design, and I really like your Javascript example. I've never seen that before and will point it out to my students." (11/25/02)

Peter A. Ponce (TATC Participant) "Once again, you've provided me a good example by which to evaluate my own work. Very clear, concise, and informative." (11/30/02)
