Video Technology

The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Personal Reflection:
After having produced projects for this class, I know that I am a lot more comfortable with video capture, editing and rendering than I ever have been before. This area has definitely left me with my eyes wide open to the prospects for the future. I hope to be able to utilize the skills and knowledge that I have obtained through this course to present these topics and concepts to my students. Actually, I can't wait to be able to do just that.

Title: Group Mood Video

Course: 105 Video Technology

Date Created: March 25, 2003

Source: Group effort production, Be Still by Steven Curtis Chapman, images and video from the Internet as well as video provided through Ulead Video Studio.

Media: Ulead Video Studio 6, Acoustica MP3 Sound Editor, Macromedia Dreamweaver

Description: In this activity we were first grouped together by our instructor. Our goal was to create a video that communicated a certain mood (ours was spirituality) without giving it away in the text that we used or the lyrics in the music. All images, sounds and sequences were to communicate our chosen mood for the video. We were then required to prepare a web page that had a storyboard and timeline to support our research and production process.

Rationale: I selected this piece for my portfolio because, after having been placed in teams (which is a great teamwork process) we were required to do the following:

  • Organize the group into working roles (producer, sound editor, researcher, conversion manager, timeline preparer, storyboard author, team coordinator). My roles were those of the sound editor, timeline preparer and general collaborator and contributor to the production of the video.
  • Capture, edit, and publish sounds for the video that allowed for no revealing lyrics but laid the foundation for the mood of the video.
  • Research and gather appropriate video to contribute to the continuity of the them.
  • Collaborate about the theme and content of the video.
  • Contribute to the video with constructive input and suggestions about the video content and construction.
  • Prepare for the mood video using an appropriately selected video editing software that utilized videos, images, sound, transitions and allowed for appropriate rendering.
  • Prepare the storyboard (done by Jane Abel) for the web page.
  • Conversion of the MPeg 2 video to WMV (done by Jane Abel).
  • Prepare an appropriate timeline to reflect the entire production process done by the team.
  • Prepare a web page that contained the storyboard, video link, timeline and credits for the videos and images that we utilized (prepared and published by Mary-Dawn Hudspeth).
  • Provide appropriate final input about the web page structure and content to the team leader (Mary-Dawn Hudspeth).

Implications for future:
Through the use of this group project at the very beginning of the class, it was an instant reminder that we could be placed in groups for intricate activities and projects such as this. After preparing this project as a group I feel more comfortable with video editing software as well as with music editing software.

I hope to get more exposure to video editing as well as with video capture using different forms of hardware as well as software. The more exposure that I receive can only be beneficial to me in the future in this area.

Reviewers Comments:
Peter A. Ponce (TATC Participant) "Impressive. I really enjoyed the imagery you selected. I initially thought of something celestial, but then I saw your timeline with Spirituality identified. I think this fits very well. I particularly enjoyed the professional look of the web site." (3/26/03)

Thelia A. Lisle (TATC Participant) "Great job, ladies. Serenity is definitely conveyed, and with everything going on in the world and in TATC, this is a much needed respite. Enjoyed your work thoroughly!" (3/26/03)

Title: Chris Rice Music Video Web Site

Course: 105 Video Technology

Date Created: April 14, 2003

Source: Chris Rice song "Smelling Coffee", Chris Rice images from www.chrisrice.com, videos from the Internet (credit was given on the credits page.

Media: Ulead Video Studio 6, Acoustica MP3 Sound Editor, Macromedia Dreamweaver

Description: In this activity, we were to create a web page for a group or artist of our choosing. The web page that we created was to project a particular mood through colors and design and was expected to appeal to the audience of the artist. The page was to promote a music video for the group that we were required to create our selves. The video was limited to two minutes but was to include:

  • sound editing to prove our knowledge in that particular area,
  • different camera angels and techniques to prove our knowledge of camera usage,
  • appropriate use of lighting to establish the mood of the video,
  • a title and end credits to prove knowledge of text effects, and
  • appropriate transitions and mood enhancing elements.

We were required to publish the video in Windows Media Video format so that it could be viewed via a streaming server. The file and web pages were to all be submitted appropriately and then posted for comments.

Rationale: I chose this particular artifact as my representation of best work because it includes elements from several of the TA subject areas (Digital Graphics, Multimedia, Video Technology and Web Mastering as well as others). The entire process is reflective of these standards and you can see that in the process components listed below:

  • planned and prepared the storyboard for the music video for Chris Rice's song "Smelling Coffee",
  • surveyed and obtained appropriate video and image content for both the web page and the music video,
  • captured and edited the sound file to be utilized with the music video, cutting down the file size to fit the two minute limit for the video,
  • recorded personal video clips to incorporate with the music video utilizing appropriate lighting and camera angles,
  • captured personal video and edited it to fit and compliment the other video content,
  • prepared music video using ULead Video Studio,
  • included a sound track in the music video,
  • included a title and credits scene for the video,
  • published the video in wmv format for inclusion with the web page,
  • chose and prepared the color and theme for the web page to target a contemporary christian audience,
  • prepared a banner, background and button themes for the page using Photoshop 7,
  • sketched the structure for the web page and outlined the basic page design,
  • prepared the web page using the structure outline in Macromedia's Dreamweaver MX,
  • posted the video to be placed on a streaming server by our instructor,
  • posted the web page and all required components to be evaluated by my classmates and instructor.

Implications for future:
Video technology and web design are areas that go hand-in-hand these days and I am very eager to learn more about this area. During this class I have been able to grow significantly in these two areas through structured preparation and design and I hope to be able to continue this process in my classes by offering my students the same structured projects with major possibilities to grow and indulge.

I plan to continue my research and learning in these two areas and I hope to be able to take my skills to a much higher level.

Reviewers Comments:
Jane Abel (TATC Participant) "Great job, Diana. The quality of your file from Ulead is very good.

I would like to pull the covers up over my head - for about 16 straight hours. And then the smell of coffee would be a great way to wake up. Hm, I wonder if my husband would be so kind. Back to work on my own video." (4/15/03)

Thelia A. Lisle (TATC Participant) "Diana, I loved your site! The structure and design were perfect for the audience you target and the purpose of your music and video. The storyboard was great. I didn't go back and replace my original cliparts with shots like you did. That was good.

Anyway, I thought your video was great. The Audio was very clear and the shots I saw were good--I'm sure they all were.

Excellent work!!" (4/15/03)
