Digital Graphics/Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection:

As I reflect back on the beginning of the digital graphics and animation course, my first reaction was dread and anticipation. I think I was dreading the course because of the limited knowledge that I had in these areas.  As the course progressed, I learned many terms and applications that I could apply and use in my classroom. I was excited because I felt as though I was obtaining the skills and resources that would help me in my future classes. It was interesting to me that I finally could apply the  terminology with these applications. Applying the elements and principles of design was a very good way to have actual hands on learning, which helped me to see their significance. The activity that involved taking a graphic and applying all of the principles and elements of design was a good way to see it all come together. One of the most exciting parts of the class was actually creating an animation and seeing it in action. I felt as though I needed more time to practice, but I do plan to work more with LiveMotion.  In the past, I had dealt with graphics, but on a lower scale. Therefore, the skills that I acquired during this course really opened my eyes to many areas I had not ever considered.

The goals I would like to accomplish in this area would be to continue learning and acquiring skills in animation. I would like to have the time to further my skills, and feel more comfortable teaching them. I also hope to use many of the resources and ideas shared in the discussions and reading to further my knowledge in both animation and digital graphics. The more I am able to utilize digital graphics editing tools, the better I am prepared to expect my students to fulfill the same requirements. It is a must that I practice these skills. Therefore, I hope to take every opportunity to raise my skill level in both areas.

Artifact #9

Descriptors: Elements and Principles of Design

Title: Representing Design

Course: 100 Foundations

Date Created: August 24, 2002

Source: Individual project using Adobe Photoshop

Media: Web page using FrontPage, Adobe Photoshop

Description: Identify the elements and principles of design by creating an image to give an example of each. Create the image so that each of the elements and principles of design is applied. We could use one object or series of objects, compose a separate image for each representation, or create a composite of the images. The representation could be either a video, multimedia presentation, desktop product, still image, or a website. I chose to use a website to deliver my product.

Rationale: I used an image and applied the elements and principles of design to show that I understood each of them. By applying the elements/principles to the image, I gained a  perspective on how the elements/principles can be applied to give various effects to an image. I searched for an image that I would be able to manipulate into each of elements, then applied the principles to give a better understanding on how different effects give an image a different look. This was a great activity, and one I plan to use in my classes. I feel as though this is a great way to apply each element and principle of design; therefore, I wanted to include it in my portfolio.

Implications for future: I now have an idea of what is meant by elements/principles of design. I am a visual learner, but  never knew how to identify the different elements in a design. I hope to implement these things into my teaching to make students aware of the different elements/principles of design. Hopefully this will help them, as it did me, to see that different effects given to an image can create balance/harmony, emphasis, repetition, and contrast, when using lines, color, and value. Knowing how to use and identify elements/principles can enhance creativity when dealing with design.

Reviewers Comments: Way to go! Great project! I especially like your texture and color examples, and your black background for color and value/emphasis. It really makes the ball stand out.

Course: 101 Digital Graphics/Animation

Date Created: October 12, 2002

Source: Individual project using digital camera, scanner, Microsoft Image Composer

Media: Microsoft Image Composer converted to JPG

Description: The task at hand was to give a brief introduction of ourselves in pictures. I was to depict myself as an online learner through a collage of pictures. I was to describe myself, how I learn, and my family using graphics that I could apply selection tools such as rectangular marquee, elliptical marquee, lasso, crop, or magic wand. These were just techniques listed that we might encounter. I also applied layering, adding text, and used the moving and duplicating selection.

Rationale: Through any type of self portrayal, one learns much more about themselves and the road they have traveled. I did just that through this activity. Not only was I able to introduce myself to other learners, I was also required to do this through the use of graphics. It was beneficial for me to get more practice using the digital camera and scanner. I attempted to use Photoshop, but found that I was much more used to using Microsoft Image Composer to apply my graphics then save as a jpg. This was an enjoyable activity and very beneficial in many ways. It covers many of the digital graphic editing tools, as well as an overview of the benefits using different images such as jpg and gif images. I wanted to include this artifact because it is something that expresses myself.

Implications for future: My goals in the future are to use an activity like this to introduce students, or use as a family collage. I also will be more apt to stress the different digital graphics editing tools available. I hope to get more familiar with PhotoShop in the future, as well as other drawing and painting tools to get even more familiar with the different digital graphic techniques such as layering and adjusting color.

Reviewers Comments: That middle picture of "Me Now" is great.  I can relate and when I saw that, I looked around my computer desk and it looked very, very similar!!!!!!!!
