Title: Unit/Lessons

Course: 104 Desktop

Description: The
assignment in this course required using the
TEKS as guidelines to create a unit/lesson plan
regarding a type of Desktop Publishing product,
such as a newsletter, brochure, flyer, card,
etc. I chose to do mine over producing a
business card. In order to model what the lesson
is teaching, it was stressed that all parts to
the lesson exhibited proper Desktop Publishing
design principles, for example, consistent
headlines, contrast, typography rules, etc. The
requirements were to state the objective of the
unit or lesson, list tools and supplies,
concepts and TEKS, a sample product, terms,
procedures, and provide an assessment tool. The
following notation was also required: sources,
hardware/software requirements, classroom
instruction time, and any modifications. The
sample of the lesson and other documentation
needed to be a universal file format, so that
all would be able to view it. I used both .pdf
and .htm for file formats.
Rationale: I included
this artifact because it is a comprehensive
unit/lesson plan that gives instructions,
procedures, requirements, list of TEKS, and
sources. I feel that it is a project that is
well rounded. The unit/lesson plan informs the
audience of all component needed to create and
assess a business card. Creating a unit/lesson
plan in this manner allows the student to engage
in online, hands on learning which is important.
The project opened my eyes to many things that
are needed for a well planned lesson, for
example, providing samples of the final product,
proper modifications, classroom management
ideas, and creating documents that ensures
readability in different environments. This was
a great opportunity to apply many of the desktop
publishing requirements. It was important for
the unit/lesson plan to have a consistent look
while utilizing the desktop publishing elements
to give an example of what the final outcome
should be. The project demonstrated the need for
careful planning and clear well thought out
instructions. This is also a great resource for
me to refer to in the future!
Implications for future:
The unit/lesson plan provides many well thought
out requirements that I plan to use in my future
classes. It will be great to be able to refer
back to the various unit/lesson plans for ideas
for future projects. I plan to use this type of
outline to create more useful lessons. A lesson
such as this can be very useful when teaching
students to be able to take instruction and
independently be successful in creating Desktop
Publishing publications. I have already used
many of the sources I found to use in my
unit/lesson plan, and I know that it will be
extremely useful to me in the future as I learn
more creative ways to utilize the Desktop
Publishing principles. The skills learned by
creating such a lesson plan will be used in
planning out other units, and will be applied in
my everyday dealings with Desktop Publishing.
Reviewers Comments: I really liked your unit lesson. You added a lot of convenience by
posting the documents in both a pdf, rtf, pub
and html form. You allowed the students, just
like us, to focus on their interests which will
make them very excited about the project. Your
lesson product is simple, yet teaches them the
very foundations of what they need to know in
expanding their DTP knowledge. This project will
give the students confidence to move on to
newletters, brochures, etc. I also enjoyed your
resources. Good job!
