Web Mastering

The Web mastering teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Web mastering, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection:

I had only used FrontPage, so the 102 Web Authoring was a course I definitely needed to take to expand what little knowledge I had in creating not only web pages, but web pages that could be functional and purposeful.  It was a challenge for me, but one that I reflect back on as a very rewarding experience. It enabled me to be learn much more about HTML and web design. I had never given web functionality much thought until this project. By using the idea of creating a web page for a specific goal in mind, it made it easier to extend my learning while fulfilling the assignment requirement. I enjoyed going and researching a location for my travel web page, then putting it all together and seeing the final product in a web page was very beneficial. The entire web mastering course was such a significant learning time for me. I have not taught any of the TA subjects; therefore, it is crucial that I obtain all that I can could from these courses. In the beginning, I felt very unsure of my abilities, but it is evident that the instructors are patient and very helpful or I would not have gained as much as I did within the course time.

My goals in my future learning pertain to feeling more comfortable in creating web pages, and not hesitating to try different types of scripting, not just limiting myself  to HTML. I hope that I am able to convey many of the objectives I learned in this course  in a way that my students will be able to benefit from them, and come to the realization as I did, that there is much more to creating a web page than just applying the text. I hope to get more practice time in creating web pages, learning more about HTML, using frames, and learning another web authoring software such as GoLive.

Title: Web Site Design

Course: TATC 102 Web Authoring

Date Created: September 28, 2002

Source: Individual project using Microsoft FrontPage, Internet research

Media:  Microsoft FrontPage

Description: We were to create a web page for a travel company focusing on a specific location. We chose the location and then created a web page that gave the specific travel information on at least 3 pages. The assignment required using all navigation schemes and "breadcrumbs" for proper functionality, for example, links to be able to travel within the site accordingly. I chose my destination and decided to provide links to home, destination, contact info, and resources. Then I created the web page as a contemporary/trendy theme. The TEKS were covered in a variety of ways, for example, delivering the information electronically, validating information, researching/comparing data, and responding to colleague's pages. A storyboard and site map were included to give a visual of the web pages and direction in which it was created.

Rationale: I believe by completing this project I was able to see in more depth the process by which one needs to go through in order to create functional and precise web pages. The project allowed creativeness while focusing on the specifics of creating a functional web page. The use of graphic examples, a storyboard, and site map allowed me to create and manipulate graphics. I gained so much by learning how to use software to create visuals such as with the storyboard. I demonstrated the use of links and how they can be used in a variety of ways to ensure functionality. I also gained much knowledge in writing HTML and learned new tips and tricks along the way. In completing this project, I was able to achieve certain goals, for example, gaining more experience with HTML creating a functional web page, and being exposed to other pages created by more experienced web designers, which helped in seeing many of the diverse ways in which information can be delivered in this type of medium. The discussion area was also very beneficial to recognize many things I might need to consider in creating pages in the future. Because this particular artifact covered such a wide variety of subject areas, I chose to include it in my portfolio.

Implications for future: I now have the opportunity and knowledge to be able to approach web design in a more applicable manner. I now can see the benefits of utilizing graphics and text plus engaging the student in the structure of creating a web page. I realize the learner can see first hand how a web page can be more functional and beneficial to the learner. The suggestions and feed back given by others during the discussion helped to see how my project could be improved and gave me an insight on just how vast the capabilities of a good web design can be. Therefore, I hope to be able to continue learning HTML, recognize functional web pages, and deliver successfully the knowledge needed to my future web authoring classes. Some of my future learning goals are to be able to use rollovers, and implement more animation. I also would like to try a different web authoring software in order to see all of the techniques that can be used to create a functional web site. I would like to take this experience and expand my HTML knowledge, recognize and create functional web pages, and extend this much needed web experience on to my students.

Reviewers Comments: Good choice of white background with so many other bright colored objects. Liked the way your navigational scheme changed on location choice by adding the link to Maui on that page only. Would have like more descriptions of locations, but time restricts us all.

Title: Putting It All Together--Final Unit Lesson

Course: 101 Digital Graphics/Animation

Date Created: October 22, 2002

Source: Individual project using Microsoft Image Composer, PhotoSuite 4, Microsoft FrontPage

Media: Microsoft FrontPage

Description: In this lesson we were to create a sample of the product for the unit lesson plan, develop two variations, name basic color scheme, analyze color themes, and summarize software and tools used. The lesson unit plan includes a home page with a prior digital graphics assignment. There was also links to other handouts, such as vocabulary, lecture notes, step-by-step instruction (also provided in pdf format), and a credits page. The web page which includes the sample use in the unit lesson plan is in the original color, I then varied the color to black/white to show emphasis, then I adjusted the color to bring out the reds and yellows for a more antique look. The entire lesson is to promote the use of a digital camera, use appropriate digital graphic editing tools, analyze the color variations, and create a web page with appropriate links and site map. It encompasses many components of digital graphic editing and web page design.

Rationale: I chose this as an artifact because the unit lesson plan project allowed me to think about ways that I could deliver a lesson more effectively to students. It also gave me more experience with web authoring. The lesson covered many aspects on digital graphics, but also focused on the instructions that would need to be applied in order to create the graphic. This type of application and thought process was good for me, in that it gave me the opportunity to see the starting point and the final product in the eyes of the student not just the instructor. The lesson plan project was assigned in increments so that I did not feel rushed with many of the requirements, which helps in having time to give more thought to the delivery process.

Implications for future: I hope in the future to be able to utilize digital graphic software then implement it into my daily web authoring classes. Through the ideas generated and shared throughout this project, I am able to see other ideas to use in my classes that I am going to definitely use. I hope to learn more about FrontPage, as well as other web authoring software. Another objective I hope to cover in my own classes in the future is the ability to publish a students work in all types of media, including creating web pages.

Reviewers Comments: AWESOME!  I will definitely use this one!  I love family trees.  You did a great job on the animation and the buttons are much better since you redid them.  I think overall – your plans are very detailed and very good!  I can tell that you really put some work into this one!
