Video Technology

The video technology teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in video technology, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection:

The Video Tech course was one that I was very nervous about since I had very little previous experience. There were many parts to this course that I just had no idea about. The readings and discussions were very beneficial to me. I learned so much through the projects and getting acquainted with the various parts to Video. I was able to learn more about hardware/software requirements, compression, and using a digital camera. The most overwhelming part was producing the video. I had not ever thought about scripts or storyboards, but now understand it could not be done without these things and proper planning. The course stepped us through the entire process, which helped in the end to put it all together. When I completed the video and course, I was able to sit back and realize just what I had done. The entire experience was very gratifying and extremely useful.

In the future, my goals are to review the things learned from the Video Tech course in preparation to teaching the course. I hope to incorporate future projects that will reveal how the production process must be thought out and properly planned. I also hope to gain more experience in sound editing and video editing. I feel as though I understand the process, but would like to feel more comfortable with the sound/video editing software.

Title: Mood Piece

Course:105 Exploratory Video Technology

Date Created: March 23, 2003

Source: Group Project

Media: MGI VideoWave, FrontPage

Description: The assignment was to create a video, with the use of music, that established a mood. The groups were assigned to create a "mood" piece video with a limit of 1 minute. Within the groups,  we had to decide the roles of producer/editor, storyboard/script artist, and sound editor. After roles were established, we made a decision on the mood, music, and video clips to research. Then the storyboard/script was created, and sound was edited. By using a video editing software (VideoWave), the producer/editor cut and edited  the various clips needed to convey the mood. Another requirement was to create a web page for distribution with a list of the roles, credits, and sources. Once the video was edited, and sound was included, it was required that the final product was a windows media (streaming) file. The group decided to use VideoWave to compress the video as a wmv.

Rationale: The mood piece assignment was a great opportunity to not only work with video editing and sound editing, but also it gave me the chance to work in a great group and learn from them. My role was producer/editor; therefore, my responsibility was to edit the scenes and put them together according to the storyboard. I think it is important to have a plan of action, which confirmed the idea of creating a storyboard, which is essential with this type of creation. I feel as though the project allowed me to not only learn more about video editing, but also information on compressing files. I enjoyed the chance to get to work in a group environment. There were many techniques and skills that I learned from the others in the group.  I chose to include this artifact because it was a great group project, and I feel as though we worked together very well and got the job done.

Implications for future: This was a great way to introduce video/sound editing skills, as well as teamwork. I feel as though I will be requiring group projects such as this one in my future classes. It gives students the chance to work with others responsibly, while learning from each other. I felt as though the roles were clearly established in this project, and I plan to use this same idea within my group projects. I feel that students, as I did, will enjoy the combination of video and sound to convey a mood. My future goals are to learn more about video editing so that I will feel more comfortable when it comes time for my classes to engage in video production.

Reviewers Comments: Great job.... everything looked great and worked great.... The mood that came to mind for me is something like tranquility, beauty, peaceful...... Am I close? Congratulations on having it all done and done correctly!!!!!!!

Title: Music Video

Course: 105 Exploratory Video Technology

Date Created: April 11, 2003

Source: Individual Project

Media: FrontPage, MGI VideoWave, FreeRip MP3, Cool Edit 2000,Canon Digital Camera,

Description: First, I had to decide on a song, and the story I wanted my music video to convey. The video project, which also included stroryboard/script and a project management plan, covered many objectives.. The outcome of the video must demonstrate knowledge in composition such as ratio of image to frame, position in frame, line of gaze, pan/tilts, movement, and perspective. I was also expected to be able to demonstrate proficiency in basic camera techniques such as zoom, focus, iris control, white balance, and filters.

Other requirements included.

  • Lighting techniques such as key, fill, and backlight, using incandescent/reflected light, color temperatures, and filter use were another requirement. Included control and/or time coded tracks, transitions, audio levels, and background music, audio and editing techniques to be used in the transition of scenes.
  •   Use character generators, fonts, colors, and principles of composition to create graphic images.
  • Include captions and/or titles for video and graphics. Produced as a windows media streaming file and accessed from the TATC windows media streaming server.
  • Video must be provided as a windows media (streaming) file. All video clips must be compressed and saved as wmv.

A web page was also required. It had to be designed to publicize the music group or individual and feature the music video as the center of interest. The design of the web page should be in keeping with the message of the video. I had to consider what effect I wanted the video to have on the audience, and discreetly include links to my storyboard and project management plan.

Rationale: I included the music video in my portfolio, because of the time spent on this project and the many things I learned about creating such a video. I am also including it as my best work because it completely encompasses everything I learned in this course (as well other courses), from using a digital camera,  breaking down a storyboard, sound editing, and web design. When I completed the project, even though there were many glitches along the way, I truly felt as though I had accomplished what I set out to do.  I believe that my video did indeed convey the message that I intended. I wanted to reveal ways of spending time with family outside in a relaxing, laidback manner. My song choice had many references to being outside and just enjoying the sunshine, therefore I included mostly outdoor clips. I began the video with a sunrise and ended it with a sunset to show a beginning and an end. I also repeated a clip which went with specific lyrics in the song to show continuity. I used VideoWave to edit the clips and create the transitions for the video. Besides having trouble with the audio, the filming and production stages went relatively smooth.  Looking back on the entire project, I can honestly say that this was one of the best learning experiences I have had. I was able to practice and learn new techniques with my camera and the video editing software. I also learned about compression schemes and file size. I developed a whole new appreciation for storyboards and project management plans. Until now, there had been many details to filming that I had never considered. I look at the production process in a whole new light after taking this course and completing this project.

Implications for future: My goals are to use what I learned from this experience and carry it over into my own classes. I plan to have the students to create this type of music video perhaps as a group project. I now have many resources and tools that I can use to demonstrate to the students the proper steps and techniques used in this type of production. I now better understand why utilizing the idea of using a storyboard and project management plan are crucial steps in pre-production planning. I will definitely have this as a requirement in my future video projects. I would like to practice using the different options on my camera, and to use the information I learned about compression. I plan to model various compression platforms to the students so they too can see the various methods of production and post production.

Reviewers Comments: I like to play your video and sing with it.  I've played it too many times, my kids say "MOM PLEASE".  I love to soak up the sun!!!!! Did you take the clip of the sunset.  It is beautiful!!!
