Task Appropriate Tools in Problem-Solving

Use task-appropriate tools to synthesize knowledge, create and modify solutions, and evaluate results in a way that supports the work of individuals and groups in problem-solving situations.

Reflection: As more and more technology and technology applications become available to the classroom, we must build the tools necessary to effectively evaluate and analyze its subject matter. As a technology teacher, not only do we need to build these tools ourselves, but we must encourage our students to build the same tools. The amount of information available will only continue to grow, so we must be able to look at that information with a critical eye. This is easier said than done.

In Foundations we learned about the use of color and design principles. These concepts were applied throughout our TATC journey. Often overlooked, these concepts proved to be very important to each course. I learned that it was important for a final product to have harmony. These means that each detail must be carefully planned.

Title: Representing Design, Principles and Elements of Design

Course: Foundations 100

Date Created: August 27, 2002

Source: Course Readings and WWW

Media: MS Word and Adobe Acrobat

Description: Create an image that represents each of the elements and principles of design using one object or series of objects. You may compose a separate image for each representation or create a composite of the images.

Rationale: I have selected this artifact because I think that being able to stop and look at a product and trying to figure out what it is communicating is important. It is important because in today's society we only have a few seconds to get our message across to our audience. That means we have to use more than just words to communicate. We need to have a toolbox filled with techniques that we can use to help us communicate. I learned how to see what techniques an artist or designer used and then apply it to some of my own works.

Implications for future: Again, I think that we get so caught up in completing an assignment that I think we fail to see the subtle details that would really make our final product much better. I think this also overlaps a little with the planning process. I am guilty of only thinking about finishing something, and once it is done never looking back see if it accomplished what I wanted.

Now I hope to use what I learned in this assignment in my classroom. First by finding examples of works and evaluating each work. I think that students may enjoy looking at works that are marketed for them, for their use of color and design principles. Then having students apply what they have seen to their own work.

Reviewers Comments: I felt Debbie did a beautiful job of finding interesting artwork to describe the elements and principals of design. Nice work Debbie!
