As I stare at this blank space,
I am trying to find the right words to explain my learning odyssey.
I am afraid that the words which I choose today will not do justice
to my experience. The only others who will understand are those
that have been through the same experience.
Looking back over the past
year I can truly say that I have grown in both knowledge and skill.
I am excited about the new ideas and experiences that I can now
offer to my students. The resources and possibilities are endless.
I hope that I can keep up! But most of all, I realized what it was
like to be a student again. All the questions, all the homework,
and the grades. I know I was not the best student, some of my work
was incomplete and few times late. I hope that I can always remember
what it is like to be on the other side of the gradebook.
I could not have imagined what
online learning was like. Working with the people in my channel
was a great experience. I never would have had the same opportunity
in a classroom setting. I would like to thank all my fellow TATC'ers
for their help and advice. I loved opening First Class (FC) everyday
and seeing that I had mail.
Standard I: I teach
terms, concepts, input strategies, and ethical practices in my classes.
But I think I fall short, in that I teach them and move on to the
next item. After TATC, I plan on using these through out the year.
I think that this will emphasize the importance of these ideas to
the students. I think this is the best way for students to own their
knowledge.
Standard II: Identifying
task requirements and applying search strategies, I hope that I
communicate clearly what I expect from my students. I plan on being
much more aware of what tasks are needed to complete a project.
I also plan to use assignments that requires the students to search
for material. I think that sifting through information is a great
learning experience. However, I think that this must be limited
at first so that the students will not feel overwhelmed by the process
and the amount of information.
Standard III: Throughout
the year we have had group assignments. I have had great experiences
with these assignments. I my classroom I have not used group assignments.
I hope to change this. This means that I need to be more clear on
job descriptions, goals, and deadlines. I also think that the group
should be given a rubric so that know what is expected of them.
Standard IV: Communicate
information in different formats and for diverse audiences. I think
that this would be a good experience of students. One way that I
thought of incorporating this into the classroom is to allow them
to role play. I think that this would be a good way to make them
aware of other people.
Standard V: To plan,
organize, deliver, and evaluate instruction for all students using
current technology. I have a lot of room for improvement in this
area. I would like to set up a class web site for my students and
their parents. I am not sure if this will be possible but I hope
to allow the students to work on this site. I have learned some
new planning tools that were extremely helpful. I hope to incorporate
them in to my planning and to plan better than I have in the past.
Foundations 100: I really
did not know what I was in for. At first I thought that Foundations
was really going to be just a bunch of busy work. I thought I was
in more of a graphic arts class. As we progressed through the TA
subjects, I realized that the ideas and principles that we learned
in Foundations applied to all of the subjects. I found myself referring
back to the readings and lessons from this unit. As I prepared my
artifacts I enjoyed looking back at my work to see my progress.
Web Authoring 102: Before
this class, I never had created and published a web page I think
that I really grew in this area. I was very apprehensive about web
authoring. By the time this class was over I was confident that
I could create a Web Site. It was great to have this as the second
course because I used what I learned in this class in all the other
TA subjects.
Digital Graphics 101: This
class was my first experience with animation, outside of Vision
IT. I really learned a lot about images and file sizes, but again
I have a lot more to learn. I never had given file size much thought
before, now I know that this is important to others who are viewing
your file. I really enjoyed and learned a lot about color and how
color is used to communicate ideas.
Desktop Publishing 104:
I think this subject is often overlooked. I guess because we
are surrounded by it so much that we often do not stop and think
about its impact on our lives. The book, The Non-Designer's Design
Book, for this course was wonderful, especially the fact that it
was short and easy to read. I teach a few weeks of Desktop Publishing
(DTP) to my students each year without giving it much thought. But
after this course I'll have to rethink how I teach this topic. I
learned that just subtle things such as alignment, whitespace, and
proximity can have a major influence on the entire product.
Multimedia 103: This
course was very new to me. My only experience with multimedia before
TATC was working with PowerPoint. A majority of that experience
was mainly self taught and personal experience. Again, we worked
with file sizes and bitmap vs. vector. The analogy that I think
of when talking about BMP vs. Vector is Chunky Peanut Butter vs.
Smooth Peanut Butter. (I like peanut butter.) Anyway, this was the
first time I edited sound files. I was frustrated trying to find
sound files but working with SoundPro software was easier than I
first imagined. I have only scratched the surface in this area I
have a lot more to learn when it comes to Multimedia.
Video Technology 105: I
learned so many basics in this course. First of all, I learned more
about my own video camera than I did from the instruction booklet
that came with the camera. I never gave much thought to recording
video other than taking enough to please the grandparents. I learned
that there is much more thought and planning that should be done
before the record button is ever pushed. I also learned that in
order to have a good quality video, you must edit the video. I think
we are not use to been that critical of our personal family movies.
I think that we usually do not pay that much attention to lighting
and camera angles. I guess that is why my video recordings seem
flat and not very active. After this class, I am more aware of television
shows and movies. I have noticed that I have paid more attention
to what is in view and what is not than I did before. Again, I have
much more to learn on this subject.
