Title:Compression Discussion for Video
Course: Video Technology 104
Date Created:April 2003
Source:
Media: Universal format, MGI Video Wave, Windows Encoder
Description:After reading about compression, create a document that illustrates at least 3 different compression schemes for the same video formatted file. You should provide the compressed files and include the statistics (file size, data rate, codec used for compression, etc.) for the original file and each compressed file. The original file can be of any origin as long as credit is given for the source.
Rationale:I have chosen this artifact to demonstrate the informed decision making because this area of Video compression was so new to me and so very interesting. I see a bright future for video editing in the curriculum becuase it provides such a fun platform for students to demonstrate and variety of projects. For the new teacher, the idea of allowing students to create videos can be a challenge and because so many people love to see themselves on camera, the end product often is not worthy of the time involved. For this reason, knowledge of compression and publishing systems for video is a very important area. With the new Windows XP program, most schools can offer simplified video editing, this allows teachers to bring this product area into their teaching.
Implications for future:As mentioned above, I believe that any group of students from third and up can use the Windows Movie Maker program, and the compression techniques available through the free program of Windows Encoder allow the supervising adult to monitor their system disk capacity and make sure that the students can enjoy their product without too much loss of quality.
Reviewers Comments: This is very informative and in a nice layout that can be viewed easily. In the RTF format, you have to use the ctrl + click to open the files. Even though these clips were very short the files took a long time to download in the avi format. Perhaps the clips could be a bit shorter for file size.
