Observation Experience
My observations were done with Kayla Steiner and Stephen Pandolfo in the areas of advanced Web Authoring/Javascript and Video Editing Tips and Techniques, respectively.
I enjoyed a six hour workshop with Stephen Pandolfo at ESC11. His style of teaching was informative and was designed to help answer questions, present new information and demonstrate step by step actions with a specific type of equipment and software. He was very skilled at allowing the students to ask questions that were of interest to them and developing the lessons from their interests. Stephen presented a tremendous handout along with online aids for the teacher to use. He demonstrated the intricate details of the cameras, compression techniques and the software for Quicktime Pro. He also allowed the learners to practice with the software to encourage additional learning and one on one assistance.
Kayla Steiner was the instructor for a six hour class in Advanced Web Authoring presented by ESC11 in High Tech Academy. We spent the day learning the beginning steps in creating JavaScript interactive additions to web pages. Kayla's style was very smooth and very geared to demonstration, evaluating the room to assess student needs and accomplishments. She is a highly skilled teacher with wonderful step by step handouts that lead the learner through the material and supports the learning with resources and examples that can be used repeatedly. What I learned from both of the observations can be summarized in the following list. - Introduce new items with a sample
- Demonstrate the steps with supporting written material for the learner who processes information more slowly
- Evaluate student progress by seeing each student accomplish the task
- Ask students to restate the process to check understanding
- Link the learning to student's statement of interest
