Desktop Publishing

The desktop publishing teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in desktop publishing, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Reflection: Desktop Publishing was one of my favorite courses. I did not realize all that went into desktop publishing. I did create some really useful projects during this course and I finished this course with a lot of new ideas from my classmates. I am really grateful to my classmates for their input. Desktop publishing is one of the courses that I am going to implement into curriculum next year. I am really excited about this new course. I am going to start my students using Microsoft Publisher then work our way to Adobe Page Maker. This is what I plan to do myself. I used Microsoft Publisher to learn the concepts where I would not have the software to hinder my learning. I have submitted two Desktop Publishing artifacts. One is a birth announcement using Microsoft Publisher, the next artifact and one of my best works is a catalog for Desktop Publishing made from Microsoft Publisher.

Artifact #6

Descriptors: Greeting Card

Title: Birth Announcement

Course: 104 Desktop Publishing; Module 1, Discussion 1

Date Created: November 2002

Source: Individually Created

Media: Microsoft Publisher

Description: Create the assigned greeting card and post it. Post your greeting card and email your mentor the card you created along with a request to your mentor to email you back an acknowledgment of your card and an overview of your work. This is a greeting card/announcement to demonstrate the competencies in desktop publishing.

Rationale: One of the assignments in TATC is to create a greeting card. The reason I chose this card for my artifact is simple, I am a proud new mother. I created a birth announcement to demonstrate my abilities in Microsoft Publisher.

I had a blast with this project. I spent many hours getting just the right look for Hannah's announcement. I spent time planning the paper, color and ribbons to accent the announcement.

I have been using Microsoft Publisher in my classes for about 2 years now and I really feel comfortable with the program. I know that learning the program is a major part of feeling successful in all of the courses. I have gone from being confident to very confident. I did not know many of the rules and "regulations" for desktop publishing and now I feel that I can create a publication that has quality. My students will greatly benefit from my participation in TATC. I know that the projects that they are creating are now better and of a higher quality.

Implications for future: I have learned the basic concepts of this pretty well. I know that in the future I will implement the lessons and concepts of desktop publishing in my classes. I would like to get a lesson plan book started with all sorts of desktop publishing lessons in it. I could also use the concepts in my other TA courses.

I am going to use this across the curriculum as well. This is a good way for teachers and students to keep members of the school and parents informed.

Reviewers Comments: "Absolutely precious! Oh, and the card is too. Nice Work, Cindy."

Title: Desktop Publishing Curriculum Catalog

Course: 204 Extended Desktop Publishing

Date Created: 5-20-03

Source: Individually Created Catalog with one section as a Team Project

Media: Microsoft Publisher, Adobe Acrobat Reader

Description: You are going to put all the pieces that we have created over the few weeks into your OWN Class Information Publication. Hopefully you have sketched out what you want your publication to look like.

Minimum components to your "Class Information Publication":
*Cover Page and Graphic (Module 2) used consistently throughout the publication

*Table of Contents section with all sections referenced

*Course Outline/Scope and Sequence section (Module 1 and 2)

*Course Calendar section (Module 2)

*Links section (Module 3)

*One additional section (Sections brainstormed in Module 1)

This is to be considered one document such as a brochure and not independent documents. It will need to be presented to us for review in a pdf file format that we all can access and read. This is not a web page but a DTP publication.
You must have all of the components above, plus any that you feel would add to your own individual publication and class. The final outcome should be a publication that works for you and your classroom.

Thoughts to ponder:

*How would you use your publication for students, parents and administrators?

*How could you incorporate student work in your publication?

*What advantages or disadvantages do you see in keeping your publication updated?

*How could you keep your publication fresh and relevant throughout the year?

Rationale: Creating a Curriculum Guide was the most beneficial to me as a classroom teacher. This guide allowed me to get organized for next year. The Curriculum Guide included the rules, materials needed and grading policies that will be implemented in my classes. It also had a Fall and Spring Semester Course Outline. I think that creating an outline for both semesters will be very helpful. Often times you start a project with the intent of going back and adding to and you simply never get to that point. The Curriculum Guide included a number of resource from the web to access and the TA TEKS for the course. I included a student Acceptable Use Policy and a Signature Page.

All of the items in the Curriculum Guide will be helpful to any teacher that is going to teach Desktop Publishing next year. I am including this artifact as one of my best works. I am really pleased with the outcome and the usability of the product with little or no modification.

Implications for future: This is going to be the legs on which I stand next year while I am teaching Desktop Publishing. There is so much information out there to teach that having a plan only makes since. Developing this plan gave me the confidence that I need to take the next step forward and embark on the teaching of Desktop Publishing. I am excited and looking forward to this challenge. I will also use the template that I set for the other TA Course that I am going to teach. I like the fact that I have something in my hand to teach with and I created it to fit my own needs as a teacher.

Reviewers Comments: "Nice publication. I like the cut-and -return signature page."
