Web Mastering

The Web mastering teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Web mastering, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

At the beginning of this course I was very apprehensive about the materials which we were about to learn. I knew I wanted to incorporate Web Authoring into the curriculum, but I also knew that I did not know how to achieve this task. This course provided me with the basic fundamental concepts that I could use to get started. I have included two examples of the projects that were created in 102-Web Authoring; Peanut Planet Travel Site and a password protected web page. Both are good examples of the depth of learning and the knowledge I hold now in these areas.

When the class got underway, I could not believe how much there was to creating web pages. I took a lot of concepts for granted, letting the software take care of most of it for me. I can honestly say I did learn some in the HTML section and others are coming to me for help in certain areas of web page production. We had an intern working at the school who came to me with an HTML problem. She could not get the fonts to change size. I looked over the code and I was able to show her how easy it was to change the code and thus change the outcome of the page. I was really excited that I could help.

I know my knowledge base for Web Authoring really increased during this class. I also know that when I apply this to my classes they too will be enhanced. In the future I plan to focus on the concepts taught to me in this class to provide a better foundation for my students to stand upon.

Artifact #14

Descriptors: Web Authoring - Designing a Travel Web Site. I chose to do a web site for a kids theme park. It was equipped with pool, stables and restaurant. The web site consisted of 3 pages, and original images.

Title:Web Site Design - Peanut Planet

Course:TATC 102 Web Authoring

Date Created: 10-3-02

Source: Individually created site with original drawings.

Media: GoLive, Photoshop, Paint

Description: A travel company has commissioned you to develop a simple site of 3 pages or more about at least ONE of their most traveled destinations. You may decide the destination to feature.You must use all three of the following navigation schemes and apply the information architecture of "bread crumbs."

Your site MUST provide the following:

* A Storyboard for the site

* A Home Page

* Company Services provided

* Map/s

* Office hours

* Links to appropriate external sites

* A site map

* Travel company logo

* Photos ... Graphic files should be optimized

Rationale: This assignment opened up my imagination and creativity. I created all of the images from scratch in Photoshop and brought them over to GoLive. I had a few problems at first getting all of the images attached to the web page. This is a great tool for my students to use in the future; creating original works. I feel comfortable working on web pages, yet I also know the difficulties associated with creating one. With all of the copyright laws being broken, I provided the necessary links for my audience and gave credit. I chose to use this assignment in my portfolio because it is a major part of the curriculum I plan to use. This was a very good learning experience for me using web authoring, as well as, Photoshop. Through this assignment I am reminded that the students will have the same problems in web development that I did. Working through the problems were a major part of what I learned in 102 Web Authoring When things do not work quite right, keep working.

When creating a web page one must consider that if the links do not work then the site is not very productive. Getting your information posted on the web is a great task, however, if all of your links are broken, then bottom line is, you are losing money and wasting time. Web page production is all about the instant source of information that this generation is getting accustomed to having. Creating a Travel Site (Peanut Planet) helped me obtain the basic knowledge of Web Authoring. One of the main goals I had when entering TATC was to become more knowledgeable in this Technology Application Course. This has given me the foundation I need to teach Web Authoring on a beginner level.

Implications for future: Creating new and exciting Web Sites is a great way to get my students involved in the development of web pages. I plan to use this lesson in my classes as an introduction to Web Authoring. I have learned many basic fundamentals in the creation of web pages that it provides a great place to start. After looking at other students in TATC, I have modified the assignment to fit the needs of my students. This assignment we were given stated that the web page builder could pick the audience that is to be addressed. I believe that my students would get lost in the self directed part , so I plan to give them a choice of type of web site, but not the audience. Typically students that do not have direction will tend to get lost in the searching and after the class period is over, they have not found one thing to do or use. I know this from experience.

I know I have a lot to learn about Web Authoring and the creation of web pages. With any thing practice makes perfect. I am going to implement this into my curriculum next year so I intend to practice this skill and become proficient in this TA course.

From this activity, what did you find out about Internet security? How secure a system does this activity represent? What degree of security do you think we need at our campus sites?

Rationale: This was a difficult task but I am including it as an artifact because I feel that I was successful. Internet security issues need to be incorporated into the classroom where you are posting student works. The success with this is a very good starting point in reaching a goal of protecting my students and there materials.Creating web pages with HTML source code is something that I looked to the software to accomplish. This assignment made me create two pages with only the use of source code. We had to take HTML code and put a password on one page in order to get into the next page.

Web Authoring is going to be a major part of the curriculum offered next year at our school. I know the Superintendent will look to me to tackle the task. 102-Web Authoring class has introduced me to the basic principles of HTML and Web page creation.

Implications for future: Developing curriculum for any course takes planning and extensive knowledge of the subject matter. I feel that I can use the information taught in 102 Web Authoring to create and implement the curriculum. With the knowledge of password protecting pages, I feel that this could be used in my classes to protect my students' work. Internet security is such a big issue today that if we can protect ourself and our students then we must try. I am planning to password protect my web pages, hopefully one day I will feel that it is safe to post grades on the internet with the protection of password protected pages. This is a long term goal I hope to accomplish.
