Multimedia
The multimedia teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in multimedia, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.
Before I took this Multimedia course I couldn't even do a PowerPoint presentation! You can imagine how horrified I was at the prospect of MULTIMEDIA. This class was very difficult for me and also very rewarding. I progressed from a PowerPoint photo album to a web page with a movie and sound. What a ride! I used the confidence I gained in this class to do a unit on PowerPoint with my BCIS classes and they had a great time. We (my students and I) learned so much by sharing our discoveries with
each other as we put together presentations on amusement parks in the United States. I was amazed at how creative and inquisitive they were. If they wanted to do something and didn't know how to do it they would just scroll through the menus and play with things until they found an item that would do something new and exciting. It made me realize that Multimedia and the other TA's are the same: play with the programs and you can go as far as you want. (I still have some trouble with the frustration factor but I am getting better!)
Plans for the future. I want to continue to soak up knowledge. I want my students to feel comfortable "playing" with the programs that are involved in Multimedia. I think confidence is gained by discovery and hope to pass this on to my kids. Maybe the caliber of kid that takes Multimedia is already far beyond me on this point, but hopefully we can still learn from each other.
I chose to put only one artifact here. I feel that my multimedia knowledge is shown in many ways in this portfolio (Artifact 12 in Standard XI Web Mastering for example). I did not want to overdo!

Artifact #5
Descriptors: Multimedia--Animation, Photo Album in Presentation Software, Video Insert, Web Page
Title: It's Still My Life--Photo Album
Course: 103 Multimedia
Date Created: February 26, 2003
Source: Modules 1 & 2
Media: Flash, Photoshop 7, PowerPoint 2000, Digital Camera, HTML Web Page
Description: We were instructed to create a "splash" page as an introduction to our photo album. The album
was to contain 5-10 pictures with a brief description of each. A video clip, self-created or not, was to be
incorporated in the web page. We were also to include a page with credits, editing
used and a summary of bitmapped and vector graphics. All of this was to be presented in the form of a web page. I originally made the entire photo album as web pages and then had to go back and use presentation software. This was my very first attempt at PowerPoint.
Rationale: This photo album was a great learning experience. It was the first project I ever did using PowerPoint. It was the first video insert I have ever done.
It was a lot of firsts! I think it turned out nicely and I am proud of it. Please notice the absence of
people in my pictures. I was tired of putting people on the internet, and thus was born "Carol's Still
Life." I used this photo album as my first artifact for Multimedia because it truly was the
first thing I have made that incorporated such a broad range of media. I feel it shows a
starting point for me and that I have a handle on multimedia, even if the grip is not yet strong.
Implications for future: I feel that this is a project that could easily be done by students in a
Multimedia class. Taking the digital camera and creating a still life of their day on campus or at
home after school or on weekends could make for some interesting photo albums! This could easily be
a group project.
Reviewer's Comments: You did a great job on your Interactive Photo Album! You should be very proud. I especially loved
the splash page; you did a great job on the animation. The title you chose, "It's Still My Life" is perfect. It fit
just right with the photos you chose for your album. It is obvious from your work that you put your all into everything you do.
Your video was absolutely hysterical. I laughed so hard and then I had to call my oldest daughter in to see and hear it as well.
As always, Carol, you did a wonderful job. Keep up the good work!
