Digital Graphics/Animation

The digital graphics/animation teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in digital graphics/animation, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Digital Graphics and Animation. I started with nothing and now I know some great stuff. The Representing Design Project was very hard for me and you can tell by the final product that I had problems. I have learned so much about copy and paste and design and scanners and digital cameras. I am getting more comfortable with using a computer and all the great products available. A new world has been opened for me. I hope that Artifact 3 will show you the progress I have made. Working with Photoshop was an interesting experience and one I want to continue.

I plan to continue taking workshops and doing tutorials that are offered in this area. I feel now I know enough to follow along in the workshops rather than sitting there afraid to do anything. I plan to keep learning and trying and redoing. I will be teaching (after successful completion of TATC) a few technology classes in the fall. I hope that Digital Graphics and Animation is one of them.

Artifact #1

Descriptors: Digital Graphics, Microsoft Paint

Title: Representing Design

Course: TATC 100 Foundations

Date Created: August 2002

Source: Module 4 Discussion 1

Media: Microsoft Word Web Page

Description: We were to create an image that represents each of the elements and principles of design using one object or a series of objects. We could compose a separate image for each representation or create a composite of the images. I chose to use the same image separately for each category. We could use any format such as a video, a multimedia presentation, a web site, etc. This being very early in our journey, I chose a web page because that seemed the least intimidating to me at that time. I used a frog as my image. It came from Microsoft Word's clipart gallery.

Rationale: As a digital graphic, this Representing Design artifact is my first webpage, therefore it is near and dear to my heart. It has a lot of problems, but I can't repair them yet and I don't know if I will. It represents a first step. I hope when this LONG journey is over it will remind me of how far I have come. Why did I select this artifact for my portfolio. I selected it because it was the only thing I could find that was available to define digital graphics. I haven't done anything with animation yet. This project ask me to create objects that would reflect some of the elements and principals of design. It was an early project and I used Microsoft Paint and Microsoft Word to make it. It shows my ineptness at manipulating the program, but progress also because I did manipulate the program. As you will read shortly, my reviewer commented on the help I got from our Technology Director. Again, I must mention that she was a giant help to me.

Implications for future: It would be presumptuous of me to think that my art project could affect the future of the world. My future will be spent on improving my skills so this type of project will look better next time. I think a project such as this would be great to use in the classroom to stress the elements and principles of design. This was a hard idea for me to grasp and working with it in this manner really helped. Many of my students will probably travel the same road I did and discover a lot.

Reviewer's Comments: I hear "relying" on the Tech coordinator...don't know what I'd do without mine..but, she doesn't know any of the Adobe ware.....that will be on my own with the help of you guys!!!

Artifact #3BEST WORK

Descriptors: Digital Graphic, Input Devices, Scanner, Digital Camera

Title: Past, Present, and Future--Family Photos Across the Years

Course: 201 Extended Digital Graphics

Date Created: November 19, 2002

Source: Module 1

Media: Photoshop 7.0 saved as a jpg and presented to the class as a web page created in Notepad with HTML.

Description: We were asked to create a collage of a favorite holiday activity that would reflect the past, present, and future using at least two different input devices. We had several other requirements: background, foreground and middle ground; a title; at least three graphics that were blended into a composite image; and then apply an alternate color process all the while keeping in mind the elements and principles of design. Whew!!!

Rationale: BEST WORK I feel this artifact is representative of my best work because I have a great feeling of accomplishment with it. I started this certification class with knowledge of e-mail and Microsoft Word! Now I am able to create web pages and collages in Photoshop. I can edit my webpages, insert graphics and so much more. This artifact was the turning point for me. I feel that I can achieve what I set out to do and am proud of what I can now accomplish.

I chose family pictures as our holiday tradition. My immediate family cannot get enough of the group picture process at holiday parties. I used Photoshop and am becoming more familiar with it. I like to use the same program several times because "practice makes perfect" and I need the practice. This program allows you to do so much and I barely scratched the surface. I am also amazed at how easy a scanner is to use. The photograph of my mom's family was very large and framed and I just scanned each end of it and overlapped the two pieces. It was a little dark in the middle, but with practice I think I could make that look better. I saw someone's work that was provided as an example and I liked the look of someone looking in to the piece and used that idea to put me in the picture looking over my "past, present and future."

Implications for future: I think Digital Graphics and Animation will be a fun class to teach. I am anxious to learn more and know that this will be an exciting class for the students. I think it is important to be prepared for your students but I think I will learn a lot from them also. I plan to do a lot of collages with the students because I have really enjoyed the ones we have done in TATC. I learned so much in the process of making them and then had a wonderful finished project that I can really enjoy. I think this will keep the students interested as they amass a portfolio of their memories while learning more about digital graphics and themselves in the process.

Reviewer's Comments: You did maavalous dahling. No really, this is great work. Something for you and your family, past, present, and future to cherish. I really like the way you are looking "into" the picture. It does look as if you are reflecting on it all. Keep up the good work.
