Communicate Information

Communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.

Maybe the best way for me to reflect in the area is with one of the mistakes I made. I remember one time I did my assignment, turned it in early, and was all smug with satisfaction. Soon I found out that I had used the incorrect presentation style--I can't remember what, but probably a .pdf instead of a web page. There are many ways to present material on a computer. There is not always a right way and a wrong way but there is often a preferred way!

Artifact #10

Descriptors: Desktop Publishing

Title: Desktop Publishing Flyer Lesson Plan

Course: 104 Desktop Publishing

Date Created: February 3, 2003

Source: Module 4 Discussion 3

Media: Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, HTML Web Page

Description: We were to create a unit/lesson plan for one of a long list of items. I chose a flyer. We were reminded to apply what we know about Desktop Publishing to all of our handouts as examples to the classes we teach. "You must model what you teach in all of your handouts and examples. Every lesson needs headlines, contrast, typography, etc." Requirements were objectives, tools and supplies list, concepts, sample product, terms utilized, procedures used in instruction and an assessment tool. We were required to list our sources, software and hardware requirements, instruction time needed and modifications for special populations. The sample had to be .rtf or .pdf for publishing.

Rationale: I chose this project as my artifact because it had such specific requirements for publishing. The sample had to be .rtf or .pdf, not a web page but linked to a web page for presentation to the tatc class. It also asked for modification for special populations. I think this artifact "hits the nail on the head" for driving home the point of this standard. (I really think this is the lesson I made the aforementioned publishing error on!)

Implications for future: This is a very useable lesson plan for the Desktop Publishing classroom as are the other lesson plans submitted by my fellow tatcers. I will use these lesson plans to keep my students engaged in their learning. Desktop Publishing is probably the only TA area that I have some experience in and I know that I will do well teaching this. I feel more confident here than in any area.

Reviewer's Comments: Everything looking good and working for me. I am using your lesson this week.
