Acquire, Analyze, and Evaluate Information

Identify task requirements, apply search strategies, and use current technology to efficiently acquire, analyze, and evaluate a variety of electronic information.

The discussion I have chosen for this artifact covers the above list and then some! The finished product is an edited sound clip which doesn't sound too bad, but getting there was another story. This began with a Multimedia discussion on sound file formats, then went to a discussion on sound editing principles. But we weren't finished yet. Then we looked at Sound Editing Software and finally edited two clips into one which is the topic I chose for this artifact. Of course, this wasn't the end of the journey--we went on to do a movie integration. The reason for my long-windedness is that this is what TATC has been about--building on everything we learned and then building some more. The process I went through for this artifact involved figuring out what I needed to do, using the computer to search for pertinent information, then using that information to analyze and evaluate sound editing software and apply that knowledge. I have just touched the tip of the iceberg with my work and I know I have alot to learn. I know going through this process with my students will make me a better Multimedia person.

Title: Manipulating Sound Editing Software

Course: TATC 103 Multimedia 1

Date Created: March 7, 2003

Source: Module 3, Discussion 1, 2 and 3.

Media: Originally a discussion but converted today (June 17, 2003) to a web page for ease of insertion into this portfolio. I can remember being upset at my classmates because instead of just discussing, they would make web pages with their information which would take forever for me to download at home (no DSL in the country!). Now I see why they made their web pages then--they don't have to do it now! Live and learn.

Description: We looked at file types and read Interactive Guides about them. We went to sites and looked at examples of audio files and listened to the different ones. We chose a sound editing software, researched it and reviewed it. We had to find the price, a web site, ease of use, etc. for a total of eleven points. The we found and/or created two sound files (I found a .wav file with script and used an mp3 file of the Friends theme) and edited them into one to use later in a movie integration project that was to be completed in Module 4.

Rationale: I chose this project as my artifact because I felt it fit the description of Standard II so well. The process I went through to produce the summary of the sound editing software and the edited clip matched the tasks to be covered under Standard II. I acquired, analyzed and evaluated information over the course of a week and used that information over the duration of the Multimedia course and other courses later.

Implications for future: I do not presently teach any TA's. I know that I have a long way to go when it comes to sound editing. The very basic editing that I did here will be built upon as I teach. I don't think that I will have my students research a lot of different sound editing software, but a very thorough studying of the software we have available at the school (CoolEdit and Premiere) will be done prior to attempting to edit. And the study of the software won't end--it is an on-going process as is all things technological. Change will have to become my middle name!

Reviewer's Comments: Carol, I love the Friend's theme song...and of course, I love your mix! It did take awhile to download, but it was worth it! If you're wondering why some other peer's mix isn't as large as yours, it's because they (me included) didn't use the entire song. I recorded 30 seconds of my song (copyright law and all). again...fun song...upbeat...enjoyable...and GREAT JOB!
