Web Mastering

The Web mastering teacher has the knowledge and skills needed to teach the Foundations, Information Acquisition, Work in Solving Problems, Communication strands of the Technology Applications Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) in Web mastering, in addition to the content described in Technology Applications Standards I-V.

Looking back where I was and how far I have come is an amazing trip; to be able to sit down now and do my homework and turn it in as a web page! I have so far to go, but have come from nothing. I am pretty good at doing a homework web page but designing one to display information is a lot more work. I have been using HTML and have learned a lot. I do a lot of looking at others' sources and HTML books when I need help, but generally I turn out a pretty acceptable homework page.

I want to learn more HTML before I start using a web design program. I want to follow that same pattern when I teach web authoring someday. I feel I have been able to solve some problems because I knew HTML instead of just jumping in and using a design program.

Title: Web Site Design, Blue Moon Travel

Course: 102 Web Authoring

Date Created: September 28, 2002

Source: Modules 3 & 4

Media: HTML in Notepad

Description: A simple web site was to be designed for a travel company using three pages, three navigation schemes--global, parallel, and local, with a tone (I chose trendy/contemporary). The site must include a storyboard, a home page, company services, map/s, office hours, links to appropriate external sites and a site map. We had to make a company logo and include photos in the site. Then when the site was finished, we had to test it for validity. I created Blue Moon Travel and included a "Destination of the Month" and gave brief notes about the services available from Blue Moon Travel. This site was a huge undertaking for me. I never had even thought about creating a web site. I learned as much HTML as I could swallow and worked like a dog. The Technology Director at school was an immense help in providing materials for me to use. She helped me with the HTML and taught me how to look for and correct errors. What a job!

Rationale: I can't even say that I am self-taught in this area. I am learning as I go. I did this project using Notepad and HTML. Trial and error is a good teacher. This assignment was given a two week due date because of its size. I used notepad and HTML to build a three page web site for a travel company I invented. I am completely new at this and it required a lot of time to experiment. I chose this as my artifact because I feel I went through the process that I will want my students to go through when they begin web design. I worked with HTML which is the foundation, I gathered information needed for the web page and to make the web page, and I definitely had experience in solving problems working with web pages. The process of working on the project made me feel good about myself and made me realize the limitless amount of information I need to start absorbing. I broke the edge of the iceberg by beginning to learn HTML and feel that my goal of learning HTML can be met with a lot of hard work on my part.

Implications for future: I need to learn more HTML (and to work with it more often so I don't lose what I learn!) and should probably look more to learning a program such as GoLive. Wish I had more time. My newest goal is to tackle ElementK and go through the GoLive tutorial. I want to learn that software so I can better compare it with HTML. I don't think it can hurt to know both. HTML is so great at fixing problems.

Reviewer's Comments: "I am impressed with your use of frames and rollover buttons!...I really liked the site. If I HAD to make a suggestion, I might say to save the pictures in a larger size or display them in a smaller size to clean them up, and add alt-text to them. Great job!!!"

Title: Movie Integration--F*R*I*E*N*D*S

Course: 103 Multimedia

Date Created: March 11, 2003

Source: Module 2 & 3, Module 4 Discussion 2

Media: HTML Web Page, Cool Edit, Internet, Microsoft Word, Clay Animation Workshop, Digital Camera

Description: We were asked to create multimedia product based on our favorite TV show. We had to pick an audience and present information about our show to convince people to watch it. (Had I been asked to make a commercial about my TV show, I think my product would have been different.) We could present the product in any form that we wanted. I chose a web page and that is why I have put this product here as my artifact for Web Mastering. We had to include a storyboard, timeline, an edited sound that we made earlier in the course, and a video clip. We also had to add a link to a site related to our show and include credits.

Rationale: I chose this as my artifact because I think it shows how much I have grown from Artifact #2. Yes, I did work with frames on my travel website but it lacked a lot of artistic talent. I am very proud of this website. I made a table, I set the background color, I made links! I was very impressed that I could go to the Friends website and "lift" a picture! I hope you agree that I am getting better at this!

Implications for future: Currently, it looks like I will be teaching my first TA course this fall--Web Mastering! This is very exciting! I need to go back and organize my TATC Web Authoring notebook. I need to copy everyone's lesson plans--so much to do, so little time! I plan to teach my students HTML first before we go into a program such as GoLive. I am sure a lot of it will be trial and error, but we will all learn from each other.

Reviewer's Comments: ...but you did a great job! The claymation video loaded fine for me and it was so cute! ...it was a cute addition to the page. ...Nice layout for your page.
