Title: Proud to be an American--Mood Piece
Course: TATC 105 Video Tech
Date Created: March 26, 2003
Source: Module 1, Discussion 4
Media: Video Web Page
Description: For this project, we were assigned to a group and in that group we had to assign the roles of producer/editor, storyboard/script artist, and sound editor. I was the sound editor. We were to create a "mood" piece video with a time limit of 1 minute. The mood was to be
established with the use of at least three video clips found on the web or self-created. Sound was necessary but should only supplement the video, not give away the mood. Viewers of the video were to be able to give a one-word description of the mood conveyed. The storyboard editor was to create a storyboard of the video for submission and our video had to list the credits.
Rationale: This mood piece was a very trying project for me. It was put together during Spring Break when my computer decided
it no longer wanted to open web pages. I had to have the computer picked up by a technician who worked on Saturday
and Sunday to repair it. It was a group project and my team members were excellent to work with. They made adjustments to allow me to remain a member and do my part. It was an interesting and rewarding experience. I learned a lot from this video. Now I
can create the storyboard needed for a video, but when we started the video I felt I could not. I learned a lot about VideoWave and feel that I could use it as a teaching tool. Before this video, I was worried about just installing it! I think our group worked well together especially through my computer problems. We were able to rely on each other's strong points. I have never liked group work, but now I can see more clearly the benefits of such a project.
Implications for future: I think the mood piece would be a good project for a video technology class. A one minute video won't defeat any of your students. If they can learn the benefits of working in a group like I did, that would be a major positive action.
Reviewer's Comments: You guys did a great video on PRIDE and PATRIOTISM. A good choice for our times, in my opinion. The rotating eagle and Statue of Liberty laser show were awesome, and the music fit the video well. Your web page was well designed and colors complemented your mood of patriotism. Excellent job.

Description: This was a MAJOR project. There was a list of nine requirements for the video such as "Demonstrate proficiency in basic camera techniques such as zoom, focus, etc." The video had to be submitted as a windows media file and saved as .wmv or .asf. It had to publicize the music group and feature the music video as the center of interest. (I don't know how, but I missed this point until right this second! I used the music to make a video and the web page was presented to seek work for the actors who made my video! What a dope!) We had to include links to the storyboard and project management plan which were made earlier in the course. We had to chose an audience and promote the video to them.
Rationale: This video was Video Technology. This portfolio would not be complete without it. There was too much in the course for a person of my inexperience to do a good job on their own. I had so many people helping me: my students, the technology director, the video technology teacher and his class. I learned a great deal and know there is much more to learn. I will be teaching this class in the fall and hope to be able to stay a day ahead of the students. Lindsay seems to have great software and equipment so I know we will have fun! Students are always so willing to try something new. This will be exciting and I will have more time to absorb what I will be teaching. I know I have a problem with one of the still shots in the video, but as I explained in the web page, there just wasn't time to fix it!
Implications for future: Much to learn. I will be learning right along with my students. I will probably use a lot of what is in TATC 105 Video Tech to get started. We will go at a much slower pace. Maybe I will take a semester to do this four week course!
Reviewer's Comments: I really enjoyed your video. I'm impressed. The quality of the video was pretty good and the quality of the audio was quite good. The download time was not too long, but I'm working on the T-1 at school--it might be a bit long for a dial-up. I like your transitions and the overall flow of the video. The audience would be anyone from a freedom-loving nation, especially people from a rural area. I could really relate to the message myself. All in all, a really nice video.
