Standards I

Informed Decision Making

Use technology-related terms, concepts, data input strategies, and ethical practices to make informed decisions about current technologies and their applications.

In looking back at my work to find an artifact for this standard, I am amazed at how far I have come. It was very interesting to go through the archives to find something that was appropriate. It made me feel like I have learned so much--which I have! I feel the artifact I have chosen demonstrates technology-related terms which were so new to me. It also shows my growth in data input strategies--I made a web page! Each time I do this I am so amazed. Ethical practices were shown by giving credit to my sources. The pros and cons were noted in the piece which helped me make an informed decision about the right camera for Yearbook (even though it was after the fact!). I feel the search for this artifact was also a learning experience. Even though I "made" it in October of last year, rediscovering it made be feel that great sense of accomplishment again.

Title: Digitally Capturing Images

Course: 101 Digital Graphics 1

Date Created: October, 2002

Source: Module 1, Discussion 3

Media: Web Page using HTML

Description: Digitally capturing images, image integrity, and file formats were the areas to be studied. We were to choose one from a list of topics and research that topic using our own experience, the readings and/or research as a foundation for the report. We were then to present our findings to the class. I chose how to capture images by using two methods--digital camera and scanner. I had experience with the digital camera as yearbook sponsor and limited experience using a scanner (I knew what a scanner looked like!).

Rationale: I chose this assignment as my artifact because I thought it demonstrated the definition of Standard I very well. I had some prior experience with capturing digital images and felt I had something to offer to my classmates which has been uncommon for me in this TATC journey. I also learned a lot doing research for this project and creating the web page for its presentation.

Implications for future: I think my students would gain from doing a presentation such as this orally. They could share what they know about capturing images and I feel sure some will know a lot, some will know a little or none and some will think they know a lot when they don't know much! Such a discussion could help them chose the correct way or a way they would like to try to capture an image for a project.

Reviewer's Comments: I agree that the more you practice, the more you will learn. The coolest thing I've learned this week is that you can manipulate images so much! Your web page has a nice appearance.
