Communicate information in different formats and for diverse audiences.

As always, there's more than one way to do anything related to computers and technology, and communication can take place in the simplest of forms (a simple drawing) or the most complicated of forms (a full-blown video production). The key, I think, is in fitting the medium to the message or the message to the medium. We're all continuously pressed for time, but I think many of the TATC courses have conditioned me to respond appropriately in balancing the message I want to communicate, its complexity and importance against the requirements of the medium, my abilities at the moment, and the pressure of time.

Descriptors: Desktop Publishing, Page Layout, Digital Graphics

Title: Greeting Card

Course: 104 Desktop Publishing

Date Created: January 16, 2003

Source: Create a Greeting Card Lessons http://desktoppub.about.com/library/weekly/aa072299.htm

Media: Adobe Pagemaker, Adobe Photoshop, Internet photos

Description: Using the above link, we were to follow the process illustrated to create our own greeting card and develop a beginner's DTP vocabulary along the way. We were to post the card and send a copy to our mentor.

Rationale: This artifact was included because it showcases a media almost everyone loves -- the lowly greeting card. I decided the trick was to make it wry, witty and amusing, so highlighted the (at the time) apparently endless road stretching before us tired TATCers. I used Photoshop to create the image -- took a stock photo out of Pagemaker, then borrowed one of the Chick-fil-a type cows and redid her sign, then found a highway sign on the Internet and changed the writing on it. I don't much like clipart, so I avoided it altogether.

Implications for future: Everyone loves to get greeting cards, and students would have several persons at any given time they would like/need/want to send a greeting card to. It could be produced at any level, and would be a good introduction to several DTP concepts.

Reviewer's Comments: Great job on the card, very creative. I have to admit I printed a copy out since I was on my home printer. That way I could get the full effect. I also have to admit that the printed version was where I could get the highway sign info and that is definitely part of the overall message. Humor and creativity seem to be evident in everything you do in this class, and it always helps me to look at your postings. Keep up the good work.
